Description: Fine in a Very Good jacket, unclipped ($1.50 net on the spine), generally toned, rubbed and with some chips and tears at the top edge. Grey cloth on the boards with gilt lettering and rules on the spine and front board. Square and firmly bound, gilt top edge, toned at the endpapers, clean otherwise. The first US edition of James's novel about an outcry over selling great British works out of the country, issued simultaneously with the first English edition. One of James's two unfinished novels at the time of his death, here complete in the scarce jacket. This copy comes from the personal collection of Caldecott Medal-winning illustrator Maurice Sendak.
