Description: The first edition of this novel by John Buchan featuring the popular characters 'Richard Hannay' and 'Sandy Arbuthnot', in the original dust wrapper. The first edition. In the publisher's original cloth with the original unclipped dust wrapper.Part of the 'Hannay' adventure series. This work was written by Scottish author John Buchan. The work is the last of his novels to feature the popular characters Richard Hannay and Sandy Arbuthnot, with Hannay's popularity heightening after the creation of the Alfred Hitchcock's movie 'The 39 Steps', inspired by Buchan's novel under the same name. This novel follows Hannay as he protects the son of a man who once knew, who is now the heir to a great and secret fortune. In the publisher's original cloth with the original unclipped dust wrapper. Externally very smart with rubbing to the head of the rear board and spine, bumping to the head and tail of the spine and slight marks. The wrap is sound with a tidemark and loss to the head of the rear and spine, fading to the spine, creasing, the odd chip, very small closed tears and marks. Offsetting and spotting to the rear. Internally firmly bound with clean and age toned pages. Very Good Indeed

Buchan, John. THE ISLAND OF SHEEP. , 1936.

Price: US$200.00 + shipping

Description: London: Hodder and Stoughton, (1936). Original green cloth, with dust jacket. First British Edition, published two days after the American edition which was titled THE MAN FROM THE NORLANDS. This was the fifth and last of Buchan's Richard Hannay mysteries, following THE THIRTY-NINE STEPS (1915), GREENMANTLE (1916), MR STANDFAST (1919) and THE THREE HOSTAGES (1924). (It is not to be confused with Buchan's 1919 book that also bears the title THE ISLAND OF SHEEP, by "Cadmus and Harmonia," pseudonyms for Buchan and his wife, which is a symposium of political, economic and social issues.) THE ISLAND OF SHEEP is Johnnie Buchan's [JB's son's] book: dedicated to him, full of his enthusiasm for birds and for wild places, and with a thirteen-year-old boy, Dick Hannay's son, added to the cast. The Island of Sheep is a name for the Færoes, where he and Johnnie spent a fortnight in 1932. The plot involves happenings in a Rhodesian kraal, a Chinese jade tablet with a strange inscription. Peter John Hannay outwits his pursuers when he remembers that pink-foot geese, when disturbed, tend to move nearer the intruder. [Smith] This volume is in fine, bright condition; the dust jacket, which bears a multicolor map of the island, is very good (with several small edge-chips). Blanchard A115.

Condition: Near Fine

Description: An excellent first edition of of John Buchan's final Hannay and Arbuthnot novel, an exciting thriller. The first edition, first impression of this John Buchan thriller, in the publisher's original price unclipped dust wrapper. The Island of Sheep' is a tense thriller, the last of Buchan's novels to focus on Richard Hannay and Sandy Arbuthnot. The novel reuses a title that Buchan had used seventeen years earlier for a political book, written in conjunction with his wife. Sales of that book had been disappointing, and Buchan insisted on reusing the title in 1936, against the advice of his American publishers who still held unsold stocks of the earlier book. In the publisher's original cloth binding, with price unclipped dust wrapper. Light shelf wear to back strip tail, otherwise externally excellent. Minor spotting to fore edge of text block. Loss to dust wrapper back strip tail, with small closed tears to head and tail of dust wrapper. Small neat tape repairs to dust wrapper reverse, with further spotting to dust wrapper reverse. Internally, firmly bound. Pages exceptionally bright, with the odd instance of light spotting. Near Fine
