Bound in by Chas Sawyer of London in 3/4 brown gilt ruled leather with matching marble paper covered boards with titles and raised bands present to the spine. Boards have shelf-wear present to the extremities. Previous owner's bookplate (Annie Cass Pearson, 1st Viscount Cowdray) present to the front pastedown, previous owner's gift inscription present to the FFEP. Text is clean and free of marks. Binding tight and solid. The standard history of the regiment in the Great War, including ROH, and awards & decorations. Kipling undertook the history of the regiment in WWI following the death in action of his son John at the Battle of Loos whilst serving with the Second Battalion; a personal tragedy from which the author never fully recovered. After five and a half years of research ('done with agony and bloody sweat') the work was immediately recognised as both a military and a literary masterpiece. Pages bright and generally clean, with instances of light spotting to first and last few leaves, most prominent to volume II. Very Good
