WODEHOUSE, P.G.. The inimitable Jeeves. Herbert Jenkins, 1923.

Price: US$121.85 + shipping

Description: Dated 1923 (MCMXXIII) on title page and details meet criteria given by McIlvaine for 1st edition: 10 titles listed on verso of half-title (from 'Piccadilly Jim' to 'The Clicking of Cuthbert'), Jenkins design as printer on verso of title page. However, cloth is slightly dark green and lettering and decoration appear black - an arrangement not recorded in McIlvaine; this may be a variant issue of the 1st edition. Spine slightly worn at top and base; scattered foxing to page edges. Internally, endpapers slightly yellowed; a few discolouration spots on some pages; otherwise, a good, tidy copy. Used - Good. Good hardback (no dust jacket)

P. G. Wodehouse. THE INIMITABLE JEEVES. Herbert Jenkins, London, 1923.

Price: US$121.85 + shipping

Condition: Good

Description: First printing (with 10 titles listed, on verso of half-title);13 x 19 cms; 255 pages; hardback: original green cloth, with title and chasing figures illustration in black on front; spine lightly mottled, bottom corners of covers and first and last pages bumped, slight rubbing to top and bottom of spine, but no splits, a couple of minor marks on covers, page edges foxed, otherwise a good copy. Neat name in ink at top of front free endpaper. No dust-jacket. I am not an expert on Wodehouse first editions, but I have noticed that there is a typographical error on page 15 (line 29): ".and yet I didn't remember ever having heard that his uncle lived anywhere is particular" (instead of "in particular", as corrected in the Project Gutenberg text of the same edition). Perhaps a collectable point? Overall, a good copy.

WODEHOUSE, P. G.. The Inimitable Jeeves.. London: Herbert Jenkins Limited, 1923, 1923.

Price: US$16033.41 + shipping

Description: First edition, first impression, in the extremely rare dust jacket, this copy from the library of James H. Heineman (1917-1994), the co-author of P. G. Wodehouse: Centenary Celebration (1981) and "the world's foremost collector of Wodehouse memorabilia" (Plum Lines), with his bookplate. The copy was later in the collection of the Rolling Stones drummer Charlie Watts (1941-2021), with his posthumous bookplate. This is the second collection of Jeeves and Wooster short stories, following My Man Jeeves (1919), and the first in the legendary Jenkins format. The 18 short stories originally appeared in The Strand Magazine between 1918 and 1922. This copy is a first issue, without the full stop after the date on the title page. We can trace only one other copy in the jacket in auction records. McIlvaine A30a1. Plum Lines: The Quarterly Newsletter of the Wodehouse Society, vol. 15, no. 3, Autumn 1994. Octavo. Original green cloth, spine and front cover lettered and decorated in black, publisher's device to rear cover in black. With dust jacket. Book fresh and clean, just slight bumping and rubbing to extremities; jacket lightly soiled, edges chipped with some loss to first word of title on spine and front panel, a few short closed tears discreetly repaired, flaps without price as issued: a fine copy in very good dust jacket.

Condition: Fine

Description: A fine copy in fine wrapper which has had a small chip restored at top of spine .This is not one of the super rare titles but it doesn't turn up very often .I don't know how many copies there out there but my best guess would be 20-30 in wrappers .Recently a variant has been found which was unrecorded. Just when you think you have nailed the bibliography something new turns up which is why I keep looking.
