Carroll, Lewis (Charles Dodgson). The Hunting of the SNARK: An Agony in Eight Fits. (First UK Edition). Macmillan and Co., London, 1876.

Price: US$350.00 + shipping

Description: Very good in original pictorial cloth boards with the drawing of the Bellman (The Captain) sitting on the mast and ringing his bell on the front boards with the "I was a Boojum" buoy riding the seas on the rear boards. The ivory cloth is somewhat toned and darkened, especially along the spine which is also lightly frayed at the top and bottom of the spine ends. The corners are lightly bumped. The hinges are firm but delicately separating. The front hinge is separated 3" from the bottom; the rear hinge 2" from the top. With all 9 charming illustrations by Henry Holiday. The frontispiece is protected by a tissue guard. The black endpapers are clean and shiny. With one page of ads of "Works by Lewis Carroll" at the end of the book. All edges are gilded. Generally very clean throughout with the former owner's simply designed bookplate and name and date in ink. And with the special booklet, "An Easter Greeting to every Child Who Loves Alice" tipped in after the half-title page. Overall, a handsome copy with 19th century patina of this charming nonsense poem. Lewis Carroll originally intended "The Hunting of the Snark" as a set of verses to be included in another of his children’s stories, but it grew too long and became a book in its own right. He published it on 1 April 1876 – the date chosen with care. However, many of his presentation copies to friends are dated 29 March. Although issued in a pictorial buff coloured cloth, he had copies bound in red, blue, green, and white cloth, all with gold decoration, to give away to his friends and family. The book was dedicated to one of his friends, Gertrude Chataway, and a dedicatory acrostic poem that introduces the book embodies her name as the first word of each stanza, Gert, Rude, Chat, Away, and also the first letter of each line. Accompanying the poem were illustrations by Henry Holiday (1839-1927), artist, sculptor, stained-glass designer, and book illustrator. He drew nine illustrations for the book; a tenth illustration depicting a Snark was rejected by Carroll – he wanted the creature to remain unimaginable. The poem owes a debt to "Jabberwocky" – some of the invented words from these verses reappear in The Hunting of the Snark and Carroll explains their derivation in his Preface, such as frumious being a portmanteau word based on "fuming" and "furious." Some of the creatures also make a second appearance – the vicious Jubjub bird and the terrifying Bandersnatch. (Edward Wakeling)

Price: US$1002.35 + shipping

Description: in-8, pp. XIV, 84, (2), con 9 tavole illustrate a piena pagina. Legatura in tela editoriale originale, color nocciola, finemente figurata in nero su entrambi i piatti, titolo sempre in nero al dorso, sguardie nere, tagli dorati.

Condition: Near Fine

Description: Illustrated by Henry Holiday. First edition, first printing, with "baker" on p. 83 and a single leaf of publisher's advertisements. Publisher's decorative light tan boards with illustrations by Holiday in black, lettered in black, all edges gilt, black endpapers. Near fine, with a touch of soiling to front board, moderate toning to spine, a touch of wear to the upper spine, tiny bookseller's embossed stamp to front free endpaper, and light offsetting from emblem on half-title page. Overall, an attractive copy, rarely found in such nice condition. Taylor 382. In this poem, Carroll returns to the setting of "Jabberwocky," the nonsense poem that was published as part of his 1872 novel Through the Looking Glass, and What Alice Found There. Specifically, "The Hunting of the Snark" tells the story of ten sailors, each of whose name begins with the letter B, who are in search of a fearsome creature known as the "snark" which they fear may be an especially dangerous sort known as a "boojum." Like "Jabberwocky," this poem is filled with fantastical adventures, impossible scenarios, and gibberish words.

Carroll, Lewis [pseudonym of C.L. Dodgson]. THE HUNTING OF THE SNARK. An Agony, in Eight Fits. , 1876.

Price: US$1450.00 + shipping

Description: With Nine Illustrations by Henry Holiday. London: Macmillan and Co., 1876. 1 page undated ads. Original deep red cloth pictorially decorated in black, all page edges gilt. First Edition, special dark-red binding, which consisted of 100 copies. This is a poetical nonsense tale, both funny and subtle, that "describes with infinite humour the impossible voyage of an improbable crew to find an inconceivable creature" [WM&G]. The crew consists of a Bellman, a Bonnet-Maker, a Barrister, a Broker, a Billiard-Maker, a Banker, a Butcher, a Baker, a Beaver and (the only one not illustrated) "a Boots." In his dedicatory verse to Gertrude Chataway, Carroll hid the child's name twice. Standard copies were issued in buff-colored cloth (with the same elaborate pictorial decoration, but in black). According to WM&G, "It is doubtful whether any variant coloured bindings were for sale, other than buff or red; the other colours seem to have been bound specially for Dodgson, who wrote to Macmillan on 21 Mar. 1876 ordering: '100 in red and gold, 20 in dark blue and gold, 20 in white vellum and gold'." (Dodgson had a few others bound just for himself, possibly in light blue, light green and dark green.) This is a very good-plus copy, with (as usual) some wear at the spine ends; the covers have some rubbing, but the original endpapers are not cracked at all. In all, this is an attractive book, with the gilt standing out well against this dark red cloth. Williams Madan & Green 115.

A Near Fine copy overall with just slight signs of use, and completely unrestored. "Although best known as the author of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland (1865) and Through the Looking Glass (1871), Lewis Carroll.was also an avid reader and writer of poetry. He greatly enjoyed the poems of the Victorian writers Alfred, Lord Tennyson, and Christina Rossetti. His own poems were varied -- some humorous nonsense, some filled with hidden meanings, and some serious poems about love and life.[Snark] stands out from all the other poems that Carroll wrote. It has inspired parodies, continuations, musical adaptations, and a wide variety of interpretations.Carroll originally intended it as a set of verses to be included in another of his children's stories, but it grew too long and became a book in its own right.Although issued in a pictorial buff coloured cloth, he had copies bound in red, blue, green, and white cloth, all with gold decorations, to give away to his friends and family" (Wakeling). The present copy is one of these, bound in striking red and gilt. Near Fine.

Cousin & Godfather, the author, Mar. 29. 1876'. With the personal stamp of 'W.M. Wilcox' to the upper half-title page. Wilcox was to sadly die later that year of tuberculosis. Biographer Morton N. Cohen connects the creation of 'The Hunting of the Snark' with the illness of Carroll's cousin and godson Charlie Wilcox. On 17 July 1874, Carroll travelled to Guildford, Surrey, to care for him for six weeks, while the young man struggled with tuberculosis. The next day, while taking a walk in the morning after only a few hours of sleep, Carroll thought of the poem's final line: 'For the Snark was a Boojum, you see'. [Morton N. Cohen (1995) : Lewis Carroll: A Biography.]. A number of Carroll's relatives including Uncle William Wilcox and many of his Wilcox cousins (Kate, Bessie, Charlie, Leonard, William and George) all died during the period 1868-76 (Lewis Carroll Society). 'Although best known as the author of 'Alice's Adventures in Wonderland' (1865) and 'Through the Looking Glass' (1871), Lewis Carroll, was also an avid reader and writer of poetry. Carroll originally intended it as a set of verses to be included in another of his children's stories, but it grew too long and became a book in its own right (Wakeling). Carroll, Lewis. [Charles Lutwidge Dodgson]. The Hunting of the Snark: An Agony in Eight Fits.. Macmillan and Co., London, 1876.

Price: US$22500.00 + shipping

Description: First edition of Carroll's whimsical nonsense poem. Octavo, original publisher's decorated cloth, all edges gilt, with nine illustrations by Henry Holiday. Near fine in the scarce original dust jacket. The jacket is complete with the top third of the front panel bent behind, hence the different shade of color. Copies of the first edition of Hunting of the Snark in the dust jacket of the utmost scarcity, with no more than a handful of copies known. Written between 1874 and1876, The Hunting of the Snark borrows the setting, some creatures, and eight portmanteau words from Carroll's earlier poem "Jabberwocky" in his children's novel Through the Looking-Glass (1871). The plot follows a crew of ten trying to hunt the Snark, which may turn out to be a highly dangerous Boojum. The only one of the crew to find the Snark quickly vanishes, leading the narrator to explain that it was a Boojum after all. Carroll often denied knowing the meaning behind the poem; however, in an 1896 reply to one letter, he agreed with one interpretation of the poem as an allegory for the search for happiness. Henry Holiday, the illustrator of the poem, considered the poem a "tragedy".
