Description: VG+/Fair. First edition. Creamy Japanese vellum boards have bright gilt lettering on front and spine. Top edge is also gilt, while the other edges are deckled. Spine and edges are very slightly toned. There is almost no wear at all. Corners are sharp. Hinges are intact and binding is tight. Every page has an illustrated border in olive green. There are 39 glossy black and white plates and a colored, tissue guarded frontispiece. Pages are bright and clean. The only exception is a gift inscription for Christmas 1903 on the ffep. Both free endpapers are toned from proximity to the dj. The very scarce dust jacket is a very thick paper lined with a white silk-type material that has an almost opalescent floral design. The dj is very toned. Lettering on front is just visible but that on spine has faded. There is a chip at top of spine, with loss to the surface paper. Flaps are corner clipped. There is a crack at the front edge of the spine but all is held together in mylar. Almost never found with the dj.

Description: 1st Edition, 1st printing - Original green cloth boards with gilt-stamped titling on cover and somewhat faded tilting on spine. 248 pages, with 1 full color plate on frontispiece and 40 full-page plates by Peter Newell. Each page throughout has an elaborate pictorial border by Robert Murray Wright printed in olive-green ink. Peter Newell (1862-1924) started his professional career as a crayon portraitist copying and enhancing photographs for the Clendenon & Nichols photography studio in the small town of Jacksonville, Illinois. In the spring of 1883 he had moved to New York where he enrolled in classes at the Art Students' League. . It was Harper's who chose Newell, by now a very famous artist, to re-interpret Lewis Carroll's classics for the new generation. The first of the three was "Alice in Wonderland" published in 1901 and causing quite a stir for its departure from the traditional Tenniel illustrations. Each was issued as a boxed "Peter Newell Edition" and enjoyed great popularity. They are regarded as among the most important of all the more than forty books he would illustrate over a long career

Newell's illustrations for "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland" (1901), "Through the Looking-Glass" (1902), and "The Hunting of the Snark" (1903), a nonsense poem, are some of the most original interpretations of these three classics written by Lewis Carroll, the pen name of Charles Lutwidge Dodgson. The whimsical and hilarious drawing offered in this listing, appears facing page 170 in "The Hunting of the Snark" with the caption, "Beau - ootiful soo - oop! Beau - ootiful soo - oop!"
