Description: A worn but solid copy of the first edition of this hard to find title. Covers are shelf worn. Interior is clean and tight. Back hinge is tight but cover is starting to split. The front end paper has the name Catherine Wilkins and the date Dec. 25th 1866. To this someone has added "This Catherine Wilkins was born Catherine Van Rensselaer (1803)" and more information about the Van Rensselaer family. This is not an ex-library copy. Illustrated with 306 wood engravings and frontispiece steel engraving. Heavy wear to the boards; half of the spine is missing; boards are nearly detached; tape to the interior hinges and staining to the end pages; interior beyond the end pages is much better; illustrations are good. Uncommon First edition by a noted Victorian historian.
