William Hope Hodgson (1877-1918) was an English author. He produced a large body of work, consisting of essays, short fiction, and novels, spanning several overlapping genres including horror, fantastic fiction and science fiction. Hodgson used his experiences at sea to lend authentic detail to his short horror stories, many of which are set on the ocean, including his series of linked tales forming the "Sargasso Sea Mythos." His novels such as The Night Land and The House on the Borderland feature more cosmic themes, but several of his novels also focus on horrors associated with the sea. Early in his writing career he dedicated effort to poetry, although few of his poems were published during his lifetime. He also attracted some notice as a photographer and achieved some renown as a bodybuilder. He died in World War I at the age of 40. First Edition with matching dates of 1946 on the title and copyright pages and the limited to 3,000 copies statement at the last page.

William Hope Hodgson. The House on the Borderland and Other Stories. Arkham House, 1946.

Price: US$650.00 + shipping

Condition: Very Good

Description: Hardcover, Arkham 1st edition, 1946. 639 pages. First thus omnibus edition, collecting four novels by Hodgson. The lovely Hannes Bok cover plus the fact that this was never reprinted by the publisher, makes this a key title for Arkham collectors and for fans of the weird supernatural in general. A Very Good dust jacket, with bright vibrant colors intact, and no fading to the spine as is sometimes seen. The front flap is not clipped, and shows the original $5.00 price. Some crinkling and one tiny chip to the head of the spine. The book is in Very Good+ condition. Full bound black boards, with slightly faded gilt lettering and designs to the spine. Endpapers are somewhat browned, particularly along the hinges, perhaps from the binders glue. From the dust jacket flap: ?THE HOUSE ON THE BORDERLAND And Other Novels by William Hope Hodgson - The four bizarre novels by the late William Hope Hodgson, though more than three decades old, are here printed for the first time in America ? from that weird adventure tale of the sea, THE BOATS OF THE ?GLEN CARRIG,? to the prolix, stylistically difficult, but wonderfully imaginative THE NIGHT LAND, here printed in its entirety and not in the curtailed version which appeared subsequent to its first publication in England in 1912. This omnibus collection takes its title from what is perhaps the best of the four novels, despite its lack of form; but all four of the novels merit the attention of the discerning reader in the genre of the weird and fantastic. Primarily the romanticist, Hodgson could not overcome a strong predilection for the weird. THE NIGHT LAND is as much a fantasy as it is a romance, a fantasy of the world millions of years in the future. A thread of romance creeps into even THE HOUSE ON THE BORDERLAND, which is surely one of the most unforgettable weird-scientific novels ever written. Indeed, only THE GHOST PIRATES lacks the customary romantic element, and perhaps because of this, it stands out as the most consecutive narrative of the four."

HODGSON, William Hope (1877-1918). The House On The Borderland. And Other Novels. Sauk City, WI: Arkham House, 1946, 1946.

Price: US$966.20 + shipping

Description: [Strange tales] FIRST U.S. EDITION. Octavo (24 x 16cm), pp.xii; 639; [1], colophon. Publisher's black cloth covers with gilt titles to spine, pastel-hued pictorial dust-wrapper priced at $5.00. Text block slightly toned, jacket bright and fresh with some minor edgewear; near fine. Not merely containing the House On The Borderland, which the word 'seminal' only begins to describe, but also The Night Land (which makes the vision of Lovecraft look cramped and unambitious by comparison) in convoy with The Ghost Pirates and The Boats Of Glen Carrig, tales packed to the top-sails with giant octopods, Sargasso weed and ghostly ships that pass in the night. Hyperbole aside (I believe that's also a place invented by Robert E. Howard), William Hope Hodgson has to rate as one of the best and most underrated writers of the weird and bizarre. His short but eventful life contained much in the way of adventure and invention, and the greater part of that leaps from his tales like the spray from a following sea.
