Agatha Christie. The Hound Of Death And Other Stories - ULTRA RARE COLLINS 1ST 1936. Collins (U.K.), 1936.

Price: US$549.99 + shipping

Condition: Near Fine

Description: AGATHA CHRISTIE - THE HOUND OF DEATH AND OTHER STORIES, published by UK Collins, copyright 1933, First Printing (states "Copyright 1936" on copyright page with no references to subsequent printings - but technically the book was copyrighted in 1933), black cloth boards with orange lettering to spine (commonly believed to be the export 1st published at the same time as the Collins orange board edition). NOTE - THIS WAS A COLLECTION OF SHORT GOTHIC SUPERNATURAL STORIES THAT CHRISTIE'S PUBLISHER COLLINS REJECTED (SINCE THEY WERE NOT MYSTERIES AND CHRISTIE'S PENNAME ROMANCE BOOKS PUBLISHED BY COLLINS HAD SOLD POORLY) - THUS ODHAMS SECURED THE PRINTING RIGHTS IN 1933. BUT DUE TO THE POPULARITY OF THE BOOK COLLINS LATER PURCHASED THE REPRINT RIGHTS FROM ODHAMS IN 1936 AND ISSUED A COLLINS PRINTING IN 1936. THE COLLINS EDITION USED UNBOUND PAGE STOCK FROM ODHAMS WITH A TIPPED-IN COLLINS TITLE/COPYRIGHT PAGE. THE COLLINS 1936 1ST PRINTING HAVE BEEN FOUND IN 3 DIFFERENT COLORED BOARDS - ORANGE BOARDS (PRESUMED 1ST STATE), BLACK BOARDS (PRESUMED EXPORT STATE), AND GREEN BOARDS (3RD STATE - LIKE THE "UNIFORM EDITION" THAT BEGAN IN 1936). THE COLLINS' BOARD EDITION OF HOUND OF DEATH IS EASILY ONE OF THE RAREST 1930S COLLINS CHRISTIE'S TO FIND (I HAVE HANDLED MORE 1ST PRINTINGS OF ORIENT EXPRESS IN ORIGINAL BOARDS THAN OF THIS BOOK). Book has just one creased page corner, no former owner or used bookstore markings/stamps inside, clean endpapers with no staining or tape residue - just a hint of foxing, hint of foxing to first few/last few pages (foxing is VERY commonly found with the Odhams 1933 edition further confirming this book used Odhams page stock), slight age darkening/dust soiling/foxing to outer page edges, no fading/wear to lettering on spine or front board, no wear to board edges or board corners, hint of wear to spine tips, none of the usual dust/handling soiling to cloth boards, tiny bumped board corner. Book also comes with a color fascimile of the UK COLLINS ULTRA SCARCE Dust jacket to provide protection from damage and to improve its appearance on a shelf. Overall a FINE- book of an extremely scarce 1930s era UK Agatha Christie Collins 1st printing. I have a number of other U.K. and U.S. Agatha Christie 1st printing hardcover books up for sale.

THE COLLINS' BOARD EDITION OF HOUND OF DEATH IS EASILY ONE OF THE RAREST 1930S COLLINS CHRISTIE'S TO FIND (I HAVE HANDLED MORE 1ST PRINTINGS OF ORIENT EXPRESS IN ORIGINAL BOARDS THAN OF THIS BOOK). Book was rebound using original Collins' orange cloth boards with the original cloth spine retained (original black publisher's name retained - author's name & book title added in gold gilt at time of rebinding - endpapers were replaced with die patterned paper and occasional reinforcement was used at certain page gathers - note that the page block was slightly trimmed in the rebinding but the outer page edges show their age so this rebinding must have been done several decades ago), just a few creased page corners, no former owner or used bookstore markings/stamps inside, clean endpapers with no staining or tape residue (tiny bit of surface tearing like from a removed bookplate), no foxing to pages or endpapers, slight age darkening/dust soiling to outer page edges (no foxing), no fading/wear to lettering on spine, no wear to board edges or board corners or to spine tips , almost none of the usual dust/handling soiling to cloth boards, no bumped board corners.
