Hassall, W.O. ; British Museum.. The Holkham Bible Picture Book.. The Dropmore Press, London, second edition, 1954, 1954.

Price: US$115.94 + shipping

Description: Half-morocco (spine and fore-edges) and blindstamped vellum boards, fore-and lower edges uncut, 36 cm, vii, 191 pp, 84 plates. Printed on Arnold & Foster "mould-made vellum" paper. The Holkham Bible Picture Book, now in the British Library collection, is one of the most idiosyncratic of the great fourteenth-century English manuscripts. Dating from about 1320-40, it contains some eighty pages of coloured drawings illustrating Genesis, the Life of Christ and the Apocalypse. Each scene is described in a brief commentary in Anglo-Norman French. From the introduction by W.O. Hassall: "The book has no contemporary title, and is not in fact intended to be an illustrated Bible. It is a pictorial representation of the Creation and Fall and the need of a Redemption. Then comes the story of Christ, leading up to the Passion, Resurrection and Ascension, interspersed with apocryphal incidents. Finally come the Signs of the End of the World and the Last Judgement, a terrifying antidote to an excessive confidence in the greatness of God s mercy. It is in fact the story of Paradise Lost and Paradise Regained. The theme turns round the three advents of God, at the Creation, at the Incarnation and at the Doom." Vellum somewhat darkened and slightly spotted, leather a little faded on upper front board, top edge of textblock slightly spotted, contents Fine.

An old catalogue entry reads: ' It is not often that a manuscript of the importance and rarity of the Holkham Bible Picture Book can be made available to the general public in such complete and luxurious form as this edition published by the Dropmore Press. The original manuscript, which has survived for six centuries, until recently formed part of the famous collection of manuscripts at Holkham Hall, Norfolk, the seat of the Earl of Leicester. The manuscript is now national property and is at the British Museum. Only the willing co-operation of the Earl of Leicester and, more recently, that of the British Museum authorities, made it possible for this historic document to be reproduced in its entirety in book form. Dr. Hassall, after many years of patient research and enquiry, has written a masterly analysis of the manuscript, consisting of an introduction covering its early history, together with a page-by-page commentary on the plates, with copious footnotes and references. The manuscript consists of 84 illustrated parchment folios, each measuring 11 by 8 ins., all of which have been reproduced to the same scale by a special process developed by the Oxford University Press.' This book is very heavy, and delivery costs may be a consideration especially outside Britain. About fine.Very faint tanning to vellum. Bookplate of Richard Barber of the Boydell Press.
