Description: 2 volumes of the 8 volumes set (volumes 2 and 3). The first American Edition of Gibbons' classic work - surprisingly late considering that the Founding Fathers all read it - but had to read English editions. Full leather (brown) with light brown spine labels - typical American, unadorned, bindings. Volume 2 has 435 pages. Volume 3 has 480 pages. Early ownership signatures 'Thos Green' on the title pages. Bookplates with the name Edward Chamberlain on the inside front covers. Bindings good and tight. pages clean and square. Leather the spines has hardened and crackled.
