Description: Text in double columns. Modern morocco-backed cloth, title in gilt on spine, upper edge red; interior clean and in excellent condition. Early edition of Clarendon's complete text. According to the advertisement, "in this edition the original manuscript of the noble author deposited in the Bodleian Library has been followed throughout, the suppressed passages have been restored, and the interpolations made by the first edition have been rejected." This classic work on British history was first published in 1702. Considered a great contribution to the art of biography and autobiography, the work is valued for depictions of the author's contemporaries. It has remained one of the most important sources of British history. Clarendon (1609-1674), one of the first great historical English writers, held the offices of Lord High Chancellor of England and Chancellor of the University of Oxford. He was chief adviser to both Charles I during the English Civil War and thereafter to Charles II. After being falsely accused of treason he fled to France where he wrote this, his major work.
