[Aldrich] drew the designs for headpieces and initials which made the folio edition one of the handsomest books hitherto produced in England . the plates are still preserved [see the illustrations in Barker's book, nos. 111, 112].' SIR CHARLES COCKERELL [1755-1837], Writer for the East India Company, postmaster-general of Bengal, principal partner in a Calcutta mercantile and banking company, mayor of Evesham in 1810 and 1833, represented Evesham in Parliament in 1820 but regarded as a 'lax attender' and never having spoken in debate. He was re-elected in the 1830 election but following a petition in opposition to his election, he and Lord Kennedy were found guilty of bribery and the election declared void. In 1831 he was returned at the top of the poll in the general election and again in 1832, sitting as a Liberal until he died in 1837.

Vol. III has mark on front cover, small mark on text block edge, slightly rough edge to last pages, and some soiling to margins in rear index pages. English statesman and historian Edward Hyde, Earl of Clarendon (1609 – 1674) was always loyal to his king, becoming a key figure for the Royalist cause and serving as Chancellor of the Exchequer after the Restoration in 1660. This three-volume detailed account was the most influential contemporary history of the English Civil War. The original publication of the History was part of a publishing war between supporters of the rival Roundheads and Cavaliers. The publication of the Roundhead Edmund Ludlow's Memoirs in 1698-1699 was a sensational success and led to a spate of Roundhead Civil War memoirs. In 1701 the Tories began a counter-attack by printing the Cavalier memoirs of Sir Philip Warwick, followed in the next year by the first volume of Clarendon's History and the memoirs of Sir Thomas Herbert, Gentleman of the Bedchamber to Charles I. Clarendon wrote portions of this work at different times with different objects. He wrote his original History between 1646 and 1648, but only recorded events to March 1644. Perhaps he hoped that his interpretation of recent errors would instruct the king or his son in the future. After being banished from England during the Commonwealth, he wrote his autobiographical Life between 1668 and 1670. He then revised the History in 1671 by incorporating the Life into it and writing new sections covering events after March 1644. It was his sons who offered the original manuscript to Oxford. After much editorial correction, the three-part work was published beginning in 1702.

First Edition of Clarendon’s celebrated History, the most valuable contemporary account of the English Civil War. Begun in April, 1641, and finished during the period of Clarendon’s exile, which extended from 1667 until his death, the History was originally prepared for printing under the direction of Laurence Hyde, Earl of Rochester, with the assistance of Dr. Henry Aldrich, Dean of Christ Church, and Thomas Sprat, Bishop of Rochester. Rochester wrote the introduction and dedications. First published in 1702-04, it was one of the handsomest books hitherto produced in England. The book is printed in the Great Primer roman and italic type which had been commissioned by John Fell, Dean of Christ Church and Bishop of Oxford, when he headed the partnership that rented the University’s right to print during the years 1672-90. The type was designed and cut by Peter de Walpergen, a German who was employed as typefounder by the partners at Oxford.
