Description: First Nonesuch Press edition, number 158 of 675 copies of this superb example of book design and presswork. The goal of the edition was to produce a book "which shall be handsome but not unwieldy, readable for those who are concerned only with the text, convenient for those who wish to use the notes in conjunction with the text" (Nonesuch Press). The Times Literary Supplement noted, on 14 December 1935, that "the Nonesuch Herodotus is true to its name. Herodotus has never been put into better English, never been better annotated, never been printed more magnificently". Lawrence's annotations surround the text in the manner of early printed books. This copy is from the library of Clarence Bloodworth Hanson, Jr (1908-1983), with his bookplate on the front pastedown. Hanson Jr was publisher of the Birmingham News, Alabama, and an avid collector specializing in the works of private presses. Nonesuch Press, Trial Pages with Herodotus, 1934. Quarto. Original blue quarter vellum, blue cloth sides, spine lettered and decorated in gilt with vermiculated rules extending onto sides, top edge rough gilt, others untrimmed. Poulton of which 7 are double-page; title page printed in red and black, Bookplates of Guy Vaughan-Morgan and of Fred & Marianne Buchwalter on front pastedown and front free endpaper respectively; small ticket of New York bookseller Philip C. Duchnes on rear pastedown, his receipt loosely inserted. Spine slightly marked and faded, peripheral browning to cloth, foxing to edges, endpapers, and occasional margins, faint damp stain with run of blue dye to lower margins of pp. 575-746, otherwise fresh and clean. A good copy.
