Description: 32 by 20.5 cms. Volume III only of this three vol. edition. 6+445+33 pp. with an engraved frontispiece portrait, decorated capitals a decorative headpiece, tailpiece etc. Bound in contemporary calf, six panelled spine with raised bands and original label, blindstamped decorative panels to boards. The spine has been professionally relaid, with restored spine extremities. Internally the book is tight and clean and carries its 292 years very well. This is an odd volume from the first Dublin printing.

Professionally recased retaining the endpapers, fore-edges of the frontispieces of Vols. I and III replaced with old paper (not affecting the engraved image), old signatures of William Hildebrand and E. J. Gunther otherwise a VG attractive set. First Dublin edition. The title continues: begun in the year 1641. With the precedent Passages, and Actions, that contributed thereunto, and the happy End, and Conclusion thereof by the King's blessed Restoration.

Some splitting at joints, but strong and holding. 1: frontispiece portrait, (i-vii); (i)-x; 1-442. 2. frontispiece portrait (i-vii), 1-459. 3. frontispiece portrait (i-vii), 1-445 plus unpaginated index. 7 1/2 x 12 inches. This is the copy that was owned by Irish writer Denis Johnston (b. 1901-d. 1984). Johnston was a protege of William Butler Yeats and George Bernard Shaw and was a friend of Sean O'Casey. He was the author of 11 plays and four works of non-fiction IThis copy contains his bookplate and signature on front pastedown, extensive notes on front pastedown, and occasional marginal notes, usually caustic in nature about the English, in pencil on the margins of volume 1.
