Early John Grant edition of this well-illustrated edition of Don Quixote, translated by Motteux (1663-1718), which was originally printed at the beginning of the 18th century, and proved very popular with English audiences until the Victorian era. Adolphe Lalauze (1838-1906) was a prolific French etcher who illustrated many different books, including Richard Burton's Arabian Nights, Scott's Waverly Novels, works by Uzanne, and Cervantes. According to the publisher's notes for the original 1884 edition with Lalauze etchings, the artist had visited Spain, and executed these drawings on the spot. Quite scarce in the original publisher's box. See: Ashbee, An Iconography of Don Quixote 1605-1895 (1895), 285.
