Description: Custom bound in a handsome set of eight quartos, in dark green 3/4 leather (probably goat skin) and pale green smooth rustic cloth; gilt lettering, gilt numbering and raised bands to spines; approx 200-250 pages to each volume. Printed on high quality paper, with wide margins. Three separate frontispieces & full-page engraved plates in red, blue & brown sepia, respectively, with tissue guards, throughout each volume. Pale green silk place-holder ribbons bound into most volumes. Complete in eight physical volumes with the following gilt-stamped respectively to each spine: Vol 1 *, Vol 1 **, Vol 2 *, Vol 2 **, Vol 3 *, Vol 3 **, Vol 4 *, Vol 4 **). Colophon at beginning of volume Vol 1 ** states: "This Edition-de-Luxe, with plates in three states, is limited to 130 copies of which this is No. 72." This uncommon set of eight, likely bound originally as four physical volumes, is much easier on the hands â€"perhaps the eyes. Small minimalist bookplate of one H.N.W. to front paste-down of most volumes. No binder's identificaton but binding is very well executed and, of course, sewn. || **A large, heavy set. Extra shipping charges may apply. Please inquire. Photos on request **. Overall a very good(+) to about near fine(-) set. Spines sunned and thus the dark green leather has turned a dark brown at spine extremities and vicinity. All joints and hinges tight though with some superficial starting to joint ends of most volumes, but a solid binding all in all. Very mild rubbing to board edges and corners intermittently throughout. Very mild damping third volume (spine label: "Vol. 2 * "), slightly affecting front board outer edge and first six leaves, leaving a mild dampstain outer portions, chiefly to tissue guards and first free endpaper. Very small chip to spine head at joint of Volume 3, * [Part One]. Very small scrape, about 1/5 inch, to spine head front Volume 4, ** [Part two]. Overall a very attractive sound set. Tight and clean.

Cervantes Saavedra, Miguel de:. The history of the ingenious gentleman Don Quixote of La Mancha. Translated from the Spanish by P. A. Motteux.. Edinburgh: Grant., 1902.

Price: US$1212.27 + shipping

Description: 4 Bände. Über die Übersetzung von Motteux (erstmals 1700-1703 in vier Bänden erschienen) heißt es im Blackwood's Magazine: "This is, we think, out of all sight, the richest and the best. Motteux, the translator of Cervantes and Rabelais, possesses a native humour which no other translator that we ever met with has approached" (Blackwood's Magazine). William Prescott urteilt: "The most popular versions in English are those of Motteux, Jarvis, and Smollett. Perhaps the first is the best of all. It was by a Frenchman who came over to England in the time of James the Second. It betrays nothing of its foreign parentage, however, while its rich and racy diction, and its quaint turns of expression, are admirably suited to convey a lively and very faithful image of the original. The slight tinge of antiquity, which belongs to the time, is not displeasing, and comports well with the tone of knightly dignity which distinguishes the hero" (Miscellanies, 1845). Die Originalradierungen - erstmals 1879-1884 erschienen - schuf der französische Illustrator Adolphe Lalauze (1838-1906).
