Description: First edition. 8vo. xvi + 392 pp. Bound in a period blind-stamped, speckled calf binding, Recently rebacked in period style with raised bands on the spine, gilt lettered red morocco spine label, extremities slightly rubbed. Some browning around the edges and title-page otherwise a very good copy. Swift wrote this intending publication in 1713, but continued to work on it for years. Publication was blocked in 1727 and 1737 and eventually it was issued in the 1758 edition amongst much controversy. A friend was entrusted with the manuscript copy and was ultimately able to publish the work in 1758, thirteen years after Swift's death, though not without some controversy.With a bookplate identifying the 'Works of Jon: Swift' to the front pastedown, signed J. Grant.ESTC reference no. T143996 An excellent copy of this late work from the popular Anglo-Irish satirist and author, best remembered for 1726's 'Gulliver's Travels'. In a half calf binding, with original paper covered boards restored. Externally, very smart. Rebacked, with endpapers renewed. Front hinge starting following leaf A3, with board holding firm. Bookplate to front pastedown. Internally, firmly bound. Pages age toned to perimeters, with areas of spotting throughout. Very Good

Leaf Z3 is signed Z2 and Aa3 is signed Aa4. Bound in full contemporary calf. Five raised bands bordered by double gold lines with six panels. Contemporary maroon morocco lettering piece in the second panel from the top, with hand stamped lettering. Contemporary signature 'Leeds' to upper blank margin of title. Light marginal browning to first and last leaves from turn-ins, joints cracked and extremities rubbed.
