A reprint of the six volume set. From Wikipedia: "David Hume 1711 – 1776 was a Scottish philosopher, historian, economist, and essayist, who is best known today for his highly influential system of philosophical empiricism, skepticism, and naturalism.Hume published The History of England, a 6-volume work, which extends, says its subtitle, "From the Invasion of Julius Caesar to the Revolution in 1688". Inspired by Voltaire's sense of the breadth of history, Hume widened the focus of the field away from merely kings, parliaments, and armies, to literature and science as well. He argued that the quest for liberty was the highest standard for judging the past, and concluded that after considerable fluctuation, England at the time of his writing had achieved "the most entire system of liberty that was ever known amongst mankind".The History became a best-seller and made Hume a wealthy man who no longer had to take up salaried work for others. It was influential for nearly a century." Most items ship with free delivery confirmation, electronic tracking and jacket protectors (generally over $10.00) if applicable. Clean recycled packing material will be used when possible.

David Hume and Tobias Smollett. The History of england, with a Continuation Down to the Present Time. Tyne Publishing Co, Newcastle-Upon-Tyne, 1880.

Price: US$186.07 + shipping

Condition: Very Good

Description: Six volume complete set. no date but continued up to the reign of Queen Victoria in 1880. Half-leather bindings are tight and supple, with clear gilt spine decorations and keylines. The dark blue/black morrocco leather is not powdery or splitting, with general edgewear and a few small flaps to the surface at the edges. The raised bands of the spines have moderate wear in places which would be improved with a bit of leather cream or such but will certainly not need the book doctor. The inner hinges are tight with beautiful marbled endpapers. Volume one has an impressive chromo-lithograph double colour frontis/title plate. There are numerous steel engraved plates throughout, one or two also coloured. The pages are generally very clean and free of foxing or wear, all edges gilt. Although six volumes, the pagination continues between v1-2, 3-4 & 5-6, hence intended to be suitable for a 3 volume binding. The six volume treatment is much more manageable. 724pp-in-2, 740-in-2, 789-in-2. Size: 4to
