Description: 1884. No Edition Remarks. 459 pages. No dust jacket. This is an ex-Library book. Brown cloth covered boards with gilt. Library copy, with expected inserts and inscriptions. Pages have mild tanning and foxing throughout, moderate at end-papers, paste-downs and text-block edges. Cracking to hinges, no damage to end papers. Some occasional mild cracking to gutters throughout, binding remains reasonably firm. Boards have moderate edge-wear with bumping to corners and rubbing to surfaces. Mild crushing to spine ends. Book has a slight forward lean. Gilt lettering is bright and clear.

Lacking volume III and IV. Memoirs of the author Nathaniel Wraxall, edited with notes and additional chapters by the editor Henry B. Wheatley. His seminal work 'London Past and Present' has been established as the standard for reference works of London. With the bookplate of John Stafford Reid Dyers to the front pastedown of each volume. Illustrated with 11 plates across the 3 volumes present. In a full cloth binding. Externally, sound. Light bumping to the head and tail of the spine, resulting in small tears to the cloth. Rubbing to the extremities. The odd spot to the fore edge. Volume V appears to be rebacked, with original backstrip preserved. Front and rear hinges have tape repairs. Front and rear hinges of volume II are strained. Rear hinge of volume I is strained. Binding has failed to the reverse of the front endpaper of volume I. Internally, generally firmly bound. Pages are generally clean, with heavy spotting to the first and last pages. Good Only

Contemporary polished red calf with richly gilt spines and marbled end papers as well as fore edge. A very attractive binding. Hinges on first two volumes a little cracked, but holding firm. Frontispiece in volume one detached and chipped in the corner otherwise a clean set nicely printed by Ballantyne Press.

Description: Memoirs of English author and politician Sir Nathaniel William Wraxall, 1st Baronet (1751-1831). Wraxall entered the employment of the East India Company in 1769. In the following year, he left the company and returned to Europe, accumulating materials for these memoirs in the courts of Berlin, Dresden, Warsaw, and Vienna. Upon returning to England, Wraxall entered Parliament, where he served as a member for years. Complete in five volumes. Octavo ( 9 1/4" tall). Decorative tan cloth bindings with armorial gilt stamping on upper boards. From private collection. Text and edges of book blocks show some minor foxing. All said, a handsome set.

The occasional offsetting on the pages opposite plates. Mark to the plate on page 307 of volume one. Loss to the frontispiece of volume two, although this does not affect the image. Small amount of loss to the lower plate on page 81 of volume five. Very Good Indeed
