OVID; SAINSBURY, Hester (illus).. The Heroycall Epistles. Translated into English Verse by George Turbervile. Edited with an Introduction and Glossary by Frederick Boas.. London: Cresset Press, 1928, 1928.

Price: US$636.01 + shipping

Description: First Cresset edition of Tuberville's translation of Ovid, number 17 of 375 copies on special mould-made paper. This is a finely printed work, with striking illustrations by Hester Sainsbury, the noted British illustrator and print-maker. A further 30 copies were printed on handmade paper. After an early career as a dancer, Sainsbury (1890-1967) turned to wood engraving, achieving success in the 1920s. The daughter of Harrington Sainsbury, court physician to Queen Victoria, Hester grew up in artistic circles, and associated with famous artists of the Bloomsbury Group and the Omega Workshop group, including Roger Fry. She was renowned for using a particular engraving tool that produced multiple parallel lines instead of just one. Tubervile's translation of Ovid's Heroides was originally published in 1567. The present edition, based on the early editions issued by Denham (1567) and Charlewood (c.1583), was edited by Frederick Samuel Boas (1862–1957), the distinguished English scholar and author of numerous works on early modern drama, including Ovid and the Elizabethans (1947). Large octavo. Original light brown buckram, dark brown buckram backstrip, spine lettered in gilt, gilt rule to covers, top edge gilt, others uncut. With 10 full-page illustrations by Hester Sainsbury. Spine slightly faded, contents clean and fresh. A near-fine copy.
