Dixon, Franklin W. (Leslie McFarlane, from an outline by Harriet S. Adams). Hardy Boys Mystery Stories / The Mark on the Door (CLASSIC GRETTA COVER ART). Grosset & Dunlap, New York, 1945.

Price: US$27.50 + shipping

Condition: Very Good

Description: This is printing 1945A-15 of the 13th Hardy Boys adventure, as per the fifth edition of Carpentieri. (You may, of course, buy if you wish from booksellers who let their computers list every printing of this book as "published 1934." though heaven alone knows what you'll get.) Kicker to top of title page has changed here from "The Hardy Boys" to "Hardy Boys Mystery Stories" (that happened in 1944), while the glossy frontispiece (which would disappear in 1947) remains. Twenty-three HBs through "The Melted Coins" listed to jacket front flap; four Don Winslows to rear flap. (No internal lists.) Wartime (acidic) pages considerably age-toned, but still flexible and easily read. Front flap also displays the wartime price-fixing scheme "P.C.J.", as called for. Glossy frontispiece and jacket art are both signed (as printed, not autograph) "Gretta." Book will close its own text block; "very good in very good" -- with an otherwise near-fine jacket downgraded a bit due to all-too-common partial sun-fading of the spine. 219 pp. Reduced from $100.

Dixon, Franklin W. (Leslie McFarlane, from an outline by Edna C. Squier). Hardy Boys Mystery Stories / Footprints Under the Window (CLASSIC GRETTA JACKET ART). Grosset & Dunlap, New York, 1945.

Price: US$31.00 + shipping

Condition: Very Good

Description: The Hardy boys in suits and fedoras? True, his 1933 frontispiece had been replaced by one from A.O. Scott as of 1944. But along with his work on the previous year's "While the Clock Ticked," J. Clemens Gretta's 1933 jacket illustration for this, the twelfth Hardy Boys mystery (said jacket illustration retained here), finds him at the peak of his craft -- even if the text reveals the Hardy brothers weren't actually present for the fight on the pier. The book itself, of course, gives us the typical Politically Incorrect (and just plain poorly researched) cliches of the times, with pigtailed "Chinamen" showing no particular excess of courage as they converse in a largely undifferentiated pidgin. (But Heck, the Stratemeyer sisters cut McFarlane's Depression-era pay to a whopping $85 for this effort; what did they expect?) This particular copy is the 1945A-20 edition, per the fifth edition of Carpentieri's "Hardy and Hardy Investigations," with 23 HBs to jacket front flap (through "The Melted Coins") and 26 Aviation Stories to rear panel. This was the fifth printing on acidic wartime paper, which here is fairly well age-browned as usual, though still flexible and easily read. Frontispiece is a line drawing on uncoated paper (NOT a glossy plate), the jacket "very-good-plus" with minor chipping to head & tail of spine. Book will close its own text block. 218 pp., reduced from $42.
