Condition: Very Good

Description: Small 8vo 7½" - 8" tall; 217 pages; [1944] early printing. Of #18 in the Hardy Boys series, originally issued in 1939. This is a wartime edition dating to about 1944, with Melted Coins listed as the most recent title on the front dust jacket flap, and "Flying Express" the last title on the aftertext ad. Unusual regarding the lack of a Wartime paper notice on title page. A handsome and very neat copy in light brown, stippled pattern composition covered boards; titling in darker brown. Orange Gretta pictorial endsheets. Yellow spine dust jacket features cover art by Laune. Dust jacket is bright and clean with only superficial rub at edges and a pair of tiny edge chips; a short, jagged closed edge tear at the bottom of the front panel. Prior owner name/address penned neatly on the front pastedown underneath the front dust jacket flap. P. C. J. Code at top corner of front flap. "Thrill Packed Air Combat Stories" catalog on rear of jacket. Expected uniform toning to the lower grade wartime paper. In all other respects a wonderful copy. NF/VG+

Dixon, Franklin W. (Leslie McFarlane, from an outline by Edna C. Squier). Hardy Boys Mystery Stories / While The Clock Ticked (CLASSIC GRETTA JACKET ART). Grosset & Dunlap, New York, 1944.

Price: US$35.00 + shipping

Condition: Very Good

Description: This is edition 1944C-21 of the eleventh Hardy Boys mystery, as per Carpentieri & Mular Fifth Edition 2004. 23 HBs through "Melted Coins" to jacket front flap; seven Lone Rangers to jacket rear flap, 20 HBs to integral ad bound in at rear of book. Text pages on wartime paper are substantially but evenly age-browned, NOT fragile or crumbling. This harder-to-find jacket with its bold color palette is one of Gretta's greatest, though unfortunately this one is missing about half the jacket spine, and a previous owner also seems to have repaired a horizontal tear near bottom of front panel by applying a piece of "Magic" tape to RECTO, reducing jacket grade here to "fair." 213 followed by 2 pp. ads, including for 20 HBs through "Mystery of the Flying Express." Here reduced from $50.

Dixon, Franklin W. (Leslie McFarlane, from an outline by Harriet S. Adams). Hardy Boys Mystery Stories / The Mark on the Door (CLASSIC GRETTA COVER ART). Grosset & Dunlap, New York, 1944.

Price: US$37.50 + shipping

Condition: Very Good

Description: This appears to be printing 1944B-13 of the 13th Hardy Boys adventure, as per the fifth edition of Carpentieri. (You may, of course, buy if you wish from booksellers who let their computers list every printing of this book as "published 1934.") Kicker to top of title page has changed here from "The Hardy Boys" to "Hardy Boys Mystery Stories" (that happened in 1944), while the glossy frontispiece (which would disappear in 1947) remains. Twenty HBs through "Flying Express" listed to final page. Wartime (acidic) pages darkened to edges, but still flexible and easily read. However, this 1944 copy came to us in what appears to be a 1941 jacket, displaying 20 HBs (through "Flying Express", January, 1942) to front flap, and priced "5050" (NOT the wartime price-fixing scheme "P.C.J.") Rear flap lists 19 X-Bar-X Boys through "Haunted Gully"; jacket rear panel offers 20 "Spotlight Books for Boys" including five Lone Rangers. Grosset & Dunlap were known to use leftover jackets as much as three years at variance, but the presence here of some minor scratches to front board -- not evident to jacket -- probably indicates this was an after-market marriage. Glossy frontispiece and jacket art are both signed (via offset printing, not "autograph") "Gretta." Book will close its own text block; spine rolled about 3/8ths-inch, but still "very good in very good." Orange coloring to jacket spine remains bright here -- not sun-faded to yellow as is common. 219 pp. Reduced from $140.

Description: Triggered by the disappearance of a brilliant young professor, this mystery takes the Hardy boys first to Kenworthy College, where they find a puzzling message on an exam paper. But then, a new clue is unearthed that sends the young detectives to the Honeycomb Caves. After many dangerous encounters, Frank and Joe discover a powerful searchlight in one of the craggy caverns along the seacoast. In the brilliant white glare of the searchlight, the startling secret of the caves is dramatically revealed. Franklin W. Dixon is a pen name used by a variety of authors writing for the classic series, The Hardy Boys. The first and most well-known "Franklin W. Dixon" was Leslie McFarlane, a Canadian author who contributed 19 of the first 25 books in the series. Other writers who have adopted the pseudonym include Christopher Lampton, John Button, Amy McFarlane, and Harriet Stratemeyer Adams. This book was first written for the Stratemeyer Syndicate by Leslie McFarlane in 1929, with W.S. Rogers as the Illustrator. The 1940 printing of the same Edition changed the wording on page 210 to name the title of the next book to come out. The printing of this same first edition was during wartime in 1944. (Note the statement of wartime production on the title page.)  The Illustrator of this printing was A.O. Scott. (See Illustration signature.) Between 1959 and 1973 the first 38 volumes of this series were systematically revised as part of a project directed by Harriet Adams, daughter of Edward Stratemeyer. The original version of this book was rewritten in 1965 by Andrew E. Svenson, resulting in two different stories with the same title. Being a 1944 wartime printing, this book does have some condition issues. But the pages are tight and all in-tact. There are a couple of ink splotches on the front and the spine has some tape reinforcement. While the books is surprisingly clean, there are pencil ?drawings? on one of the front papers and a grade-schooler?s writing on the bottom of pages 56 - 57. Reader Age: 8 ? 12 Grades: 3 ? 7 Book #7 in Series 1st Edition, 1944 Printing
