Condition: Near Fine
Description: London: Hamish Hamilton. 1991. First British edition. One of Murakamis best works, a metaphysical sci-fi detective story involving human data processing, unicorns, andyou guessed itthe end of the world. Perhaps one of Murakamis more outlandish novels, its influences (Raymond Chandler, PKD) seem clear. 8vo. First British edition. Publishers black cloth lettered in gilt to the spine panel, in the symbolic dust jacket designed by David Cutter. A near fine book, the cloth clean, the board corners and tips just gently bumped but the binding tight and square. Some light spots and marks to the textblock edges ,but seldom seeping, and internally fine throughout with the usual hint of toning commonly found in the late 80s-early 90s paper stock. The dust jacket unclipped (£14.99) and complete, with some light bumps to all corners and at the spine tips, but the spine panel not faded as is usually the case, and altogether very presentable.

Description: Octavo, cloth-backed boards. First British edition, first printing with "1 3 5 7 9 10 8 6 4 2" on copyright page. "An unnamed but decidedly hard-boiled detective takes on a strange case involving a brilliant but naive elderly scientist, his beautiful, apparently mute granddaughter, some very strange technology, and what appear to be kappas, traditional Japanese monsters. In alternating chapters a different unnamed narrator visits a town at the end of the world, where things aren't what they seem and unicorns are common. This strange and surrealistic novel by a mainstream writer who occasionally strays into genre territory is heavily influenced by the cyberpunks." - Anatomy of Wonder (2004) II-792. The author's fourth novel and his second to be translated into English. Anatomy of Wonder (2004) II-792. A fine copy in fine dust jacket with £14.99 price printed on front flap. (#158572)
