Wonderful B&W illustrations throughout text, plus frontispiece. Includes a chapter on the history of drinking, wine, wine in cooking, cocktails, punches and other mixed drinks and more. An appendix featuring the St Regis Hotel Wine List, as well as a reference for primary wine and liquor glass shapes. Leonard T. Holton (1906-1973) was a New York illustrator and cartoonist. Charles Brown is also known for penning The Gun Club Cook Book, or a Culinary Code for Appreciative Epicures.

Description: Publisher's orange cloth binding with drawings of men and women drinking, titles in white on black background. The lightest of wear at the corners, but a very nice copy externally. Dust wrapper with some small chips at top and bottom of spine, not affecting lettering. Another chip on back cover at the bottom near the fold is about three quarter of an inch by one quarter and affects a few letters of the promotional text. Quarter sized stain on upper margin of frontispiece and title page (looking like a bourbon splash). Brown staining, this time perhaps a single malt, to fore edge and sometimes margins of pages 119-142, not affecting text. Otherwise a clean and nice copy of a much-desirable book, with no owner's signatures, no bookplates, no underlining, with joints strong, etc. 190 pages, including index.

Description: A wonderful pair of complementary food and drink books, both written by --AND SIGNED BY-- Charles Browne, the former Mayor of Princeton, New Jersey and founder and President of the Nassau Gun Club (of Princeton). The Gun Club Cook Book, warmly inscribed by Charles Browne in Princeton in 1933, is the 1931 "new and revised edition". A sharp copy to boot: Tight and VG (light staining along the rear panel) in a crisp, price-clipped, VG+ dustjacket, with very light chipping along the top-edges and mild soiling to the rear panel. The Gun Club Drink Book, also signed by Charles Browne on the half-title, is a very presentable copy of the 1939 1st edition. Solid and VG in a crisp, price-clipped, VG example of the uncommon, Leonard Holton-illustrated dustjacket. Both books uniform octavos, both charmingly illustrated throughout by Leonard Holton.
