This copy is a 1st trade edition, 1st printing of the book published by Houghton Mifflin in 1976 and SIGNED by the author on the half-title page. The dust jacket is protected from further wear by a Mylar sleeve. ************************************* "The piercing, iconic semi-autobiographical novel of a domineering father and ambitious son, from the #1 New York Times bestselling author of The Prince of Tides ***** Step into the powerhouse life of Bull Meecham. He s all Marine fighter pilot, king of the clouds, and absolute ruler of his family. Lillian is his wife beautiful, southern-bred, with a core of velvet steel. Without her cool head, her kids would be in real trouble. Ben is the oldest, a born athlete whose best never satisfies the big man. Ben s got to stand up, even fight back, against a father who doesn t give in not to his men, not to his wife, and certainly not to his son. Bull Meecham is undoubtedly Pat Conroy s most explosive character a man you should hate, but a man you will love. ***** Praise for 'The Great Santini': ***** 'Stinging authenticity . . . a book that won t quit.' The Atlanta Journal ***** '[Pat] Conroy has captured a different slice of America in this funny, dramatic novel.' Richmond News-Leader ***** 'Conroy takes aim at our darkest emotions, lets the arrow fly and hits the bull s-eye almost every time.' Milwaukee Journal Sentinel ***** 'Robust and vivid . . . full of feeling.' Newsday ***** 'God preserve Pat Conroy.' The Boston Globe" /////////////////////////////////////////////////// Donald Patrick Conroy (October 26, 1945 March 4, 2016) was an American author who wrote several acclaimed novels and memoirs; his books The Water is Wide, The Lords of Discipline, The Prince of Tides and The Great Santini were made into films, the last two being nominated for Oscars. He is recognized as a leading figure of late-20th-century Southern literature. . . . ///// In 1976, Conroy published his novel, The Great Santini. The main character of the novel is Marine fighter pilot Colonel "Bull" Meecham, who dominates and terrorizes his family. Bull Meecham also psychologically abuses his teenage son Ben. The character is based on Conroy's father Donald. (According to My Losing Season, Donald Conroy was even worse than the character depicted in Santini.) ///// The Great Santini caused friction within the Conroy family, who felt that he had betrayed family secrets by writing about his father. According to Conroy, members of his mother's family would picket his book signings, passing out pamphlets asking people not to buy the novel. The friction contributed to the failure of his first marriage. However, the book also eventually helped repair Conroy's relationship with his father, and they became very close. His father, looking to prove that he was not like the character in the book, changed his behavior drastically. . . . ********** The above text was taken from Random House Publishing Group (via Google Books) and Wikipedia.

Description: An uncorrected proof, in the original orange wrappers, perfect bound. Laid in is a publisher's invoice with a message to the recipient, the invoice is stamped "Complimentary Copy No Charge." Though the invoice is not dated it is for $10. Hard-nosed Marine fighter pilot Lt. Col. Wilbur "Bull" Meecham, calls himself, "The Great Santini". He runs his family with a strict hand. In 1962, before the Vietnam War, the Meecham family struggles to fit into the Marine town of Beaufort, South Carolina where they are newcomers. Conroy makes the point that Santini is a warrior without a war, and, in turn, is at war alterenately with the service he loves and his family. The novel explores Ben Meecham's growth into manhood, his experiences playing basketball for his high school, as well as his friendships with a Jewish classmate and an African-American farmer. This investigation exposes the love-hate relationship between Ben and his father, and the lengths Ben goes to in an effort to win his father's acceptance and love. Basis for the big screen film directed by Lewis John Carlino that starred Robert Duvall, Blythe Danner, and Michael O'Keefe among others. Both Duvall and O'Keefe were nominated for Academy Awards, Best Actor and Best Supporting Actor. A very good plus tight copy with a small crease to the bottom of the front cover

EXERPT FROM THE DUST JACKET: "With this novel, his first, Pat Conroy, author of The Water is Wide, takes us into the family life of a fighter pilot. Bull Meecham is the epitome of the Marine officer - as a tough disciplinarian at home as at the base. Rebellion, or even difference of opinion, is not tolerated. Objections are met with the statement 'The Great Santini has spoken.' His attempts to stand up for himself or his mother and sister are contemptuously dismissed. His feelings for his father are a mixture of hate and fear, reluctant pride in his prowess, and unacknowledged love. The Marine Corps and flying ae the most important things in Bull's life. Next come his image as a tough guy, the Catholic Church, his old buddies, his wife and children. His sons are destined to become Marine pilots, his daughters to provide their husbands (Marines, naturally) with a good home and more fodder for the Corps. [.] This is the story of a boy's determination to be himself, whatever that may be. It is violent, shocking, funny, moving, and overwhelmingly real. From the early pages, with Bull's wife and children waiting at the airport to welcome the Great Santini back into their midst, to the bittersweet ending, the reader's interest and emotions are fixed upon the fluctuating fortunes of the Meecham family." CONDITION: This book is in quite nice condition. Due to small to moderate stain at the foot of pages 109 to 246, (which can be seen at the foot), the book itself is VG, (else fine). The marking does not in anyway compromise the text or come in proximity to it. Cover and binding is bright and handsome. Binding is tight and solid. Completely unmarked except for signatures. The dust jacket is in fine, beautiful condition. Full refund if not satisfied.
