Description: Preface by Ernest Hemingway. 5-3/4" x 8-1/4", xiii + 448pp. Printed on acidic paper and bound in sewn signatures in maroon cloth boards with illustrated end papers. Edge fading, light soiling, edge wear, corner bumping to cover. Jacket, which is price clipped, is faded at spine, though title block remains clearly legible. There is a 1/4" x 2" section missing out of the edge of the jacket at the top of the spine and some chipping at the base of the spine, otherwise some edge wear, shelf wear, age discoloration (visible on predominantly white back cover) to jacket. Fore edge is deckled. Binding is square and tight. Pp. 202-203 noticeably tanned as a result of offsetting from a news clipping laid in. Pages are otherwise gentle age toned but clean and unmarked.

Description: First edition. Cloth with dust jacket. Very good copy in good dust jacket. Book with no major flaws, few little streaks of discoloration at top edge of rear board, where the jacket was once in wet contact with the board. Contemporary owner's name (Esther Solar) on half-title. Dust jacket generally worn along the top edge with a triangular chip there on the front and rear panels, top of spine panel shallowly chipped, old nonprofessional tape repairs along the hinge to the back inside flap on the blank side of the jacket. Price of $2.50 intact on front flap. Map endpapers of the battlegrounds around Madrid. A memoir of the Spanish Civil War. Regler served as political commissar of the XII International Brigade; at the time a convinced Communist with years of experience in the Soviet-led movement, he later broke with the Communists based among other factors on his experiences in Spain.

Page 1 is the title page, next page is a brief bio of Gustav Regler, followed by Ernest Hemingway's preface, printed in full, five pages written in Camaguey, Cuba, 1940, followed by 6 pages of text by Regler. See Audre Hanneman: Ernest Hemingway: A Comprehensive Bibliography, pages 109-110, "Note: The publishers issued a sixteen-page promotion leaflet, three months before book publication, which included Hemingway's preface in full. The preface is briefly quoted on the back cover of the dust jacket." Near fine with only minor wear along the extremities. Given the fragile nature of this item, it is in remarkably nice condition. Quite scarce and desirable.
