Description: A Fair 8vo hardcover (Chatto & Windus, Piccadilly 1883) in NO dust jacket (if issued). Although the title page has the same publisher and date as the First Edition and no additional printings are referenced, this copy has red--not brown--cloth with a paper spine label and does not include any rear publisher ads. No half-title page (if originally present), the Contents/Chief Illustrations leaf is loose (and has a bit of fore edge chipping), and a few other leaves appear slightly shaken. Decorated end papers with a bit of residue on both paste-downs and penned initials in the upper corner of the front paste-down. Still the contents (vi + 323 pp. (including four woodcuts in text) + a frontispiece and three additional plates (including a fold-out) otherwise appear clean, complete, and attached, albeit with a bit of age tanning. Soiled and stained red cloth with a sunned spine and a browned and rubbed upper spine label.

Description: The front and back covers are gauffered, with the front cover indents being coloured in black. The title is also indented in black on the front cover, written as a half title. The front cover also displays an indented picture of a pyramid which is illuminated in gold. There is also a title written on the spine of the book which is written as a half title. This has been illuminated in gold. Opposite the title page, there is a pictorial drawing of the great pyramid observatory which has been protected by a sheet of vellum. This book has soft covers. Ex-library, With usual stamps and markings, In fair condition, suitable as a study copy. The Author claims that this work shows how the conflict between the use of the pyramid and a tomb may be resolved, and the reasons why it was built. Scarce.

Description: "Proctor was inspired by a passage in the neo-Platonic philosopher Proculus's commentary on Plato's Timaes, which mentioned that before the Great Pyramid was completed it was used as an observatory. Based on his reading of the account he surmised that when the Pyramid was completed to its fiftieth course, i.e. to the level of the top of the Grand Gallery, which was also the floor of the Kings Chamber, it would have made an excellent observatory." CONDITION Brown bds with Black ruled design and bright Gilt tooled detailing (light rubbed cloth which is just starting at spine ends, white mark to rear and smudge to front) pp 323 with with 8 illus and publishers list to rear. Mostly very bright but tissue guard to frontis is discoloured and half title sl foxed, title page has name in pencil. Copy is sl shaken. Size: 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall
