He gave himself a 10,000-word per week goal and told a friend he'd never worked so hard on a novel before, hoping to shred his "reader's nerves to rags." Collectors frequently strive to enrich their legacy libraries by acquiring first editions of contemporary classics. These initial printings are prized for encapsulating the authentic essence of a novel's inception, presenting the text in a format untouched by subsequent revisions or alterations. This pursuit allows collectors to obtain the most genuine version of a novel, preserving the original nuances and quirks, even errors, by the author. For instance, first editions by literary figures such as Mark Twain, Bill Clinton, and J.K. Rowling often feature errors that were later corrected in subsequent printings, deviating from the unique characteristics of the initial impression. Published when America was still deep in the Great Depression, "The Grapes of Wrath" is a novel detailing the heartbreak of rural dispossession and a work that, in the words of ANB, "captured the decade's angst as well as the nation's legacy of fierce individualism, visionary prosperity, and determined westward movement." In citing it as one of the "Books that Shaped America," the Library of Congress noted, "Few novels can claim that their message led to actual legislation, but 'The Grapes of Wrath' did just that. Its story of the travails of Oklahoma migrants . . . ignited a movement in Congress to pass laws benefiting farmworkers. When Steinbeck won the Nobel Prize in 1962, the committee specifically cited this novel as one of the main reasons for the award." The novel won the Pulitzer Prize in 1940 and was printed in a large press run, making it readily available at the time and ever since. The present volume, attractively bound in full morocco, is an affordable alternative to copies of the first edition in the original binding and dust jacket, which sell for prices many times the one we're asking here. FIRST EDITION, First Printing, with the words "First Published in April 1939" printed on the copyright page.

Steinbeck, John. GRAPES OF WRATH. The Viking Press, New York, 1939.

Price: US$5000.00 + shipping

Description: First edition of the Pulitzer and National Book Award-winning novel that made Steinbeck a household name. GRAPES OF WRATH has been generations of students' introduction to the Great Depression and the Dust Bowl. Steinbeck's extensive use of symbolism and Biblical motifs also makes it an excellent exercise in literary criticism for both high schoolers and hardcore academics, all pulled together with exceptionally lyrical prose. GRAPES OF WRATH was an immediate hit, and stayed atop bestseller lists for the majority of 1939. But it was not always beloved: the novel was a lighting rod for Steinbeck, both professionally and personally. His portrayal of the difficult lives of migrant workers and the corruption of the agriculture business earned him "constant vilification" from powerful farmers' groups, and the book was banned (and even occasionally burned) in a variety of communities (Demott). In his diaries, Steinbeck lamented how the novel's popularity "got really out of hand, became a public hysteria," leading to the idea that he was, himself, "public domain" (Demott). This first edition, with its hyperbolic but prescient dust jacket editorial copy ("Perhaps GRAPES OF WRATH is the greatest modern American novel. the greatest single creative work this country has ever produced"), captures the tipping point of Steinbeck's career. 8'' x 5.25''. Original tan buckram binding with brown titles and line art. Original unclipped ($2.75) color pictorial dust jacket illustrated by Elmer Hader. Yellow topstain. Endpapers with illustration of the Battle Hymn of the Republic in yellow and orange. 620 pages. Laid in is an advance order form for the book from Gotham Book Mart. Jacket spine toned. Some minor edgewear. Rubbing at front fold. Book has minor shelfsoil, faint toning. Overall, sharp. Very good plus in a very good jacket.

Description: A splendid copy, bound in finely woven buckram cloth and stamped brightly in brown ink on the front boards and on the spine. Very clean and tight throughout with yellow topstaining. In a complete first edition dust jacket illustrated by Elmer Hader with the original price of $2.75 at the top of the front inside flap and "First Edition" in blue capital letters at the bottom of the flap. With some very light edge-wear and a touch of rubbing to the corners. There is also a small area of dampstain on the verso at the bottom of the spine, but it is not apparent when looking at the richly-colored art work. A superb, collector's copy of this modern classic and Pulitzer Prize-winning novel. Set during the Great Depression, The Grapes of Wrath focuses on the Joads, a poor family of tenant farmers driven from their Oklahoma home by drought, economic hardship, and changes in financial and agricultural industries. Due to their nearly hopeless situation, and in part because they were trapped in the Dust Bowl, the Joads set out for California. Along with thousands of other "Okies", they sought jobs, land, dignity, and a future. The Grapes of Wrath is frequently read in American high school and college literature classes due to its historical context and enduring legacy. A celebrated Hollywood film version, starring Henry Fonda and directed by John Ford, was made in 1940. Description: A Near Fine copy of the book in like dust jacket. Book with a faint dampstain on the edge of the front end paper and the half-title, otherwise a clean, excellent example. In a jacket that has a little chip at the spine and front flap fold, retaining the critical "first edition" slug on the lower flap fold. Spine a trifle toned, otherwise a bright fresh copy. Steinbeck's classic account of the Dust Bowl and Depression era struggle of the Joad family, The Grapes of Wrath is a quintessential American classic. It would win both the National Book Award and Pulitzer Prize; and the Nobel Prize committee would refer to it as Steinbeck's "epic chronicle" upon giving him the award in 1962. The book was the best-selling novel of 1939 and became instantly controversial upon its release for its depiction of farmers and worker rights. Of course, The Grapes of Wrath was also adapted into the classic 1940 film, directed by John Ford and starring Henry Fonda, which was one of the first films selected by The Library of Congress for preservation in the United States National Film Registry. "It is a very long novel, the longest that Steinbeck has written, and yet it reads as if it had been composed in a flash, ripped off the typewriter and delivered to the public as an ultimatum" (Contemporary New York Times Review). Price: US$8500.00 + shipping

Description: 619pp. Cloth, pictorial endsheets printing a page from the score of the "Battle Hymn of the Republic." A fine copy, in very near fine dust jacket with the price and the 'First edition" denotation on the front flap intact and a hint of uniform darkening and minor edgewear to the spine panel. Cloth slipcase and chemise. First edition, first printing, of Steinbeck's standout novel of the 1930s dust bowl struggle of the Joad family. It won both the National Book Award and Pulitzer Prize, and was perhaps the fundamental reason for Steinbeck's eventual receipt of the 1962 Nobel Prize for Literature, whereupon it was referred to it as an "epic chronicle." The book was among the best-selling novels of 1939 and elicited strong sentiments on both sides of the issue for its depiction of the bleak prospects for farmers and workers during the preceding decade. The Grapes of Wrath was adapted to the screen in 1940, based on Nunnally Johnson's superior screenplay, directed by John Ford, and starring Henry Fonda, Jane Darwell, John Carradine, et al. Ford and Darwell won Oscars as Director and Best Supporting Actress. Goldstone & Payne record that the first printing consisted of 50,000 copies and by the end of the first year following publication 430,000 copies had been printed. Ordinary copies have always been available, and apart from a couple of remainders of copies turned up in the context of retired booksellers' inventories (notably one in Austin, Texas, in 1978) copies of the first printing in fine condition remain the exception. The "First Edition" slug on the jacket's front flap's bottom corner. Ahearn APG 014d. Goldstone & Payne A12. The 1940 recipient of the Pulitzer Prize. Steinbeck's tour de force which deeply moved readers across the United States, including the First Lady, Eleanor Roosevelt. This novel played a major role in reshaping American labor laws. It stands as a warning against completely unchecked, unfettered capitalism (one of the reasons why it became a target of book bans). Throughout the novel, greed and apathy each take their turn in ruining the lives and prospects of the Joads, and other migrant families like them. Widely considered to be one of the finest American novels of the twentieth century, Steinbeck's masterpiece still remains relevant today, with parallels between the current climate crisis and the Dust Bowl, and the suffering of migrant farmhands in his day versus the plight of low-wage workers in today's agricultural industry. Our copy of this celebrated novel presents beautifully. A very scant trace of foxing to the top textblock; three small spots of paper restoration on the jacket's spine panel, subtly done.

STEINBECK, John.. The Grapes of Wrath.. New York: The Viking Press, 1939, 1939.

Price: US$24387.58 + shipping

Description: First edition, first impression, presentation copy, inscribed by the author "For Vincent Sheean, John Steinbeck" and additionally inscribed by the recipient, "Although it is signed to me, Mr Steinbeck intended this book to go for the Spanish intellectuals in exile - Vincent Sheean". Vincent Sheean (1899-1975), the American journalist and writer, published Personal History in 1935. A film adaptation, entitled Foreign Correspondent and directed by Alfred Hitchcock, was released in 1940. Working as a reporter for the New York Herald Tribune he covered the Spanish Civil War, hence his note about "Spanish intellectuals in exile". Sheean had been in Spain with Ernest Hemingway in 1938 and was responsible for the only known meeting between Steinbeck and Hemingway. Writing in John Steinbeck and his Contemporaries, Valerie Hemingway notes that Steinbeck had been "a thorn in Hemingway's side". Nevertheless, Hemingway expressed an interest in meeting Steinbeck in 1944 and, accordingly, Sheean invited Steinbeck and Hemingway to dine with him at Tim Costello's Irish pub on Third Avenue, New York. John O'Hara, the short story writer, was also present and had with him an antique walking cane which he had received as a gift from Steinbeck. Hemingway in a drunken and boarish manner bet O'Hara 50 dollars that he could break the cane over his head. The bet was accepted and O'Hara lost both his cane and the money. Steinbeck was disgusted and rather bemused at Hemingway's gratuitous cruelty. Hemingway promised to replace the cane, but never did. Steinbeck would later send O'Hara a replacement. The fine jacket design is by the children's book author and illustrator Elmer Hader (1889-1973), joint recipient, alongside his wife Berta, of the 1948 Caldecott medal. Steinbeck was so taken with the illustrations in their book Billy Butter (1936) that he specially requested Elmer design the cover for The Grapes of Wrath. But the present unsurpassably fine copy of Steinbeck's greatest work is almost literally from a time capsule: it is one of a dozen or so copies discovered in a warehouse in the 1980s, still in their unopened boxes from Viking Press. While the copies at the bottom of the box had suffered some water damage, those in the upper layers, like the present one, look unchanged from the day they were packed by the publisher. While there are numerous copies of this book currently on the market, the condition here sets it far above the competition. It is certainly the finest copy of any important modern first edition we have ever offered for sale. FIRST EDITION, First Printing, with the words "First Published in April 1939" printed on the copyright page.
