Description: First Edition. 12mo. Decorative binding with stamped, gilt lettering to spine and front cover. Red top edge. Former owner signature to front endpage. Illustrations and decorations by Ernest H. Shepard. The Golden Ageis a collection of reminiscences of childhood, written byKenneth Grahameand first published in book form in1895, byThe Bodley Headin London and by Stone & Kimball in Chicago. The Prologue and six of the stories had previously appeared in theNational Observer, the journal then edited byWilliam Ernest Henley.Widely praised upon its first appearance ?Algernon Charles Swinburne, writing in theDaily Chronicle, called it one of the few books which are well-nigh too praiseworthy for praise ? the book has come to be regarded as a classic in its genre. Typical of his culture and his era, Grahame casts his reminiscences in imagery and metaphor rooted in the culture ofAncient Greece; to the children whose impressions are recorded in the book, the adults in their lives areOlympians, while the chapter titled TheArgonauts refers toPerseus,Apollo,Psyche, and similar figures ofGreek mythology. Grahame's reminiscences, inThe Golden Ageand in the laterDream Days(1898), were notable for their conception of a world where children are locked in perpetual warfare with the adult 'Olympians' who have wholly forgotten how it feels to be young ? a theme later explored byJ.M. Barrieand other authors. The first editions were not illustrated. An edition published in Britain and America by The Bodley Head in1899featuredhalftoneblack-and-white artwork byMaxfield Parrish? 19 full-page illustrations and twelve tailpieces. The full-page pictures were afrontispieceand one accompanying each of the eighteen chapters. Very Good. Soiling to covers with sunning to spine. Some stray marks and soiling to interior.
