Henry James. The Golden Bowl (Volume II only). Charles Scribner's Sons, New York, 1904.

Price: US$50.00 + shipping

Condition: Good

Description: First Edition (SD, 'Published, November, 1904' ). Volume II only. Once listed, this will, by far, be the least expensive copy of the first edition of the second volume. You can see the covers in the photos. They have only a little light soiling. There is also some light bending at the corners. The gilt lettering on the spine is bright. There is a vertical crease on the spine. There's a little wear at the spine ends, a tiny bit of rub-through at the top layer of the cloth at the bottom edge. With the exception of one tiny spot of rub-through on the front middle edge the edges and corners look very good. No other rubbing. The top page edge is gilt. The middle and bottom page edges are deckled or rough-cut. They did a good job. The spine, particularly at the top, has a significant forward lean. However, the binding of the book is pretty solid throughout. I found only two or three instances where there was a very thin space between two facing pages. There is also a thin space, with the webbing showing, between the blank first and second rear end papers. The previous owner penned a good deal of writing on the front inside cover and blank first front end paper (I've provided a photograph). There is also a faded penned first name off the top edge of the page following the copyright page which states 'Book Second, The Princess.' I didn't see any other writing anywhere else in the book. The pages are quite clean. Scrolling through I only found a few small, inconspicuous spots of soiling. I may have missed something. There's a light, thin, semi-crease coming down from the middle of the top edge to the middle of the outer edge of around 80 consecutive pages, not terrible, the kind of crease you see when something presses against a page or pages, not a sharp placeholder crease. I did see two instances of a top corner crease, also three or four consecutive pages with a bottom corner crease. There are no markings in the book and no attachments of any kind. 'Set in England, this complex, intense study of marriage and adultery completes what some critics have called the "major phase" of James's career. The Golden Bowl explores the tangle of interrelationships between a father and daughter and their respective spouses. The novel focuses deeply and almost exclusively on the consciousness of the central characters, with sometimes obsessive detail but also with powerful insight.'

Set in England, this complex, intense study of marriage and adultery completes what some critics have called the "major phase" of James' career. "The Golden Bowl" explores the complex relationship between a father and daughter and their respective spouses. The novel focuses deeply and almost exclusively on the consciousness of the central characters, with sometimes obsessive detail but also with powerful insight. The title is taken from Ecclesiastes 12: "Or ever the silver cord be loosed, or the golden bowl be broken, or the pitcher be broken at the fountain, or the wheel broken at the cistern. Then shall the dust return to the earth as it was: and the spirit shall return unto God who gave it. Vanity of vanities, saith the preacher; all is vanity." Named by Modern Library as one of the 100 Greatest Novels of the 20th century. It was the basis for the 2000 film, directed by James Ivory, and starred Uma Thurman, Nick Nolte, Kate Beckinsale and Jeremy Northam.
