A translation (by W. J. Gordon) of LA JANGADA: HUIT CENTS LIEUES SUR L'AMAZONE (1881), an adventure novel narrating an 800-league voyage down the Amazon River on a giant raft 1000 feet long and 60 feet wide comprising a floating village and a crew of eighty. The Scribner edition utilized the plates of the 1881 Sampson Low edition. Myers 28. Taves and Michaluk V022. Just a hint of rubbing at head and tail of spine panel and corners, a fine, bright copy. Description: Two volumes, Parts I and II. First English edition. Contemporary half leather and marbled boards; gilt titles, 5 raised bands; all edges gilt. The edges are lightly rubbed and there is some spotting to the spines (especially to volume II). There is light toning to the pages and it appears that one illustration in each volume had been loose and then reinserted because, even though now secure, the edges protrude slightly.
