Condition: Very Good

Description: *HARDBACK, stated second printing May 1986, is in very good, almost like new condition. There are some erasure marks at the top corner of the front endpaper. This novel was not finished form at the time of the author's death. Beyond a very small number of minor interpolations for clarity and consistency, nothing has been added. In every significant resprect the work is all the author's. Cover painting on the dust jacket "Woman with a Basket" (1927) by Juan Gris - has a 1/2" tear at the bottom front near the spine. Otherwise, everything else is minute, just slight edgewear, creasing and minor staining and soiling on the back cover. There is no price on the dust jacket, and there is a star indentation on the back of the boards on the quarterbinding. Could be a book club edition, but is not so stated.

Description: Published 25 years after the author's death and with the permission and involvement of his family, this is perhaps the most unsung of all Hemingway's novels. An explanatory note from the publisher: "the novel was not in finished form at the time of the author' death. In preparing the book for publication, we have made some cuts in the manuscript and some routine copy-editing corrections. Beyond small interpolations for clarity and consistency, nothing has been added. In every significant respect the work is all the author's." " The internationally revered, Nobel and Pulitzer Prize-winning author's "interpretation of love and art is darkly profound, his imagination is keenly alive, his writing masterly."

Price: US$93.50 + shipping

Description: First edition. 8vo, half tan cloth and boards, lettered on the spine in brown, in the publisher's original dustjacket. 247. A fine copy of the text, the paper fresh and essentially pristine, the binding with some evidence of age or use, still strong and attractive, the dust-jacket complete. There is a gift inscription at the front free-fly. Hemingway's last published work, issued posthumously. Set in the Mediterranean, the story of a young couple on their honeymoon and the dangers which they face when the literary career of one sparks jealousy in the other. Two of the most "complex and convincing" characters of Hemingway's books. "Hemingway began THE GARDEN OF EDEN in 1946 and worked on it off and on for the next fifteen years, during the same period he was writing THE OLD MAN AND THE SEA, A MOVEABLE FEAST, THE DANGEROUS SUMMER, and ISLANDS IN THE STREAM. He described the book’s theme as ‘the happiness of the Garden that a man must lose.’ Here, Hemingway’s interpretation of love and art is darkly profound, his imagination is keenly alive, his writing masterly. THE GARDEN OF EDEN published twenty-five years after the author’s death, is a provocative and astonishingly modern work." -Publisher.

Octavo, bound in full morocco by the Harcourt Bindery, gilt titles and ruling to the spine, raised bands, gilt ruled to the front and rear panels, gilt signature to the front panel, inner dentelles, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt. In fine condition. An exceptional presentation. A sensational bestseller when it appeared in 1986, The Garden of Eden is the last uncompleted novel of Ernest Hemingway, which he worked on intermittently from 1946 until his death in 1961. Set on the CÃ te d'Azur in the 1920s, it is the story of a young American writer, David Bourne, his glamorous wife, Catherine, and the dangerous, erotic game they play when they fall in love with the same woman. "A lean, sensuous narrative.taut, chic, and strangely contemporary," The Garden of Eden represents vintage Hemingway, the master "doing what nobody did better" (R. Z. Sheppard, Time).
