Description: 1837. Third Edition. 261 pages. No dust jacket. This is an ex-Library book. Half bound brown leather with brown cloth covered boards. Volume Two. Pages are moderately tanned and foxed throughout. Occasional thumb-marking present. Previous owner's inscription and plates to front pastedown and free endpapers. Cracking to hinges with exposed binding. Light scuffing to text-block edges. Binding remains firm. Boards have heavy edge wear with bumping to corners and rub wear all over. Moderate splits to joints. Leather peeling to spine and corners, with noticeable scuffing and scratches overall. Notable tanning to spine and edges. Dark scuffed marking to all surfaces. Book is bowed and forward leaning.

Three volumes. Small 8vo. [169 x 100 x 77 mm]. xx, [ii], 278 pp; [2]ff, 261pp; [2]ff, 355pp. Bound in contemporary half purple roan, cloth sides, the spines divided into six panels and lettered in the second and third, plain endleaves, top edge gilt. There are a few early pencil marks and notes in vol.1 and occasional spotting in vol.2, but it is a very good copy. The bindings appear to be by the same workshop but are not entirely uniform - vol.3 has a different cloth to the other two. This is the first Pickering edition, and was followed by further editions in 1844 and 1850. Bookplate of William Charles Cotton (1813-1879), the writer on bees.
