Description: 1890 FIRST UK EDITION. Rebound in dark brown pebble patterned cloth, gilt lettering spines, text block untrimmed with original silvered top edges. From the collection of US National Ski Hall of Famer, Ned Gillette, with his name and address stamp on the FFEP of both volumes (Stowe Vermont), and his Sun Valley name crimp on the short-title page of both volume. Gillette, tragically murdered in the mountains of northern Pakistan in 1988, was renowned cross-county skier, explorer and mountaineer. He traversed Ellesmere Island on skis, made the first ski circuit of Mt Everest and another of Denali (and 1st one-day ascent of Denali), skied in remote China and Manchuria, made a 285 mile winter ski crossing of the Karakoram Range, much more. He authored a book on cross country skiing and one on his ski circuit of Everest. Both volumes have rubbing and chipping at spine ends, and some spine edge splitting at the ends but spines solid and not cracked open, no owner writing or marks on pages (other than Gillette's ownership stamp/crimp), minor foxing on preliminary pages but nearly all pages have no foxing, solid binding, complete with all pages, illustrations, and maps. The volumes measure 228mm tall x 155mm and have 510 and 509 pages, five folding color maps, 12 b/w plates (engravings and photos), many in-text b/w illustrations, index.
