Description: First Edition. Original red cloth, black stamping. A series of disastrous speculations by the elder Girdlestone financially ruins the firm. After keeping the impending bankruptcy a secret from everyone for a time, he tells his son (whom he has fooled with a dummy ledger) about it, who is disgusted by his father's rashness. They resort to chicanery to save the firm. They plan to send an agent to the Ural mountains who will claim to have found diamond mines. Very Good, mild cocking, some light fading at spine, bookplate at front pastedown.

Description: 399pp + 32ads. Burgandy bds, corners & spine ends bumped, edges rubbed. Back bd shows minor rubbing and soiling. Titles in black, and 2 blocks of black vig panes, to front. Titles in gilt, and 1 block vig in black, to spine. Blind stamped vig to centre of back bd. Decorated patern to end papers, both front and back f.e.p. are faded. Owners name to front f.e.p.Title and dedication page joined along there top edge since printing, obviously never cut. Interior foxed.
