HEMINGWAY, Ernest.. The Fifth Column. A Play in Three Acts.. New York Charles Scribner's Sons, 1940.

Price: US$3025.00 + shipping

Description: First edition, sole printing, without Scribner's 'A' on copyright page; 8vo; slight age-toning, discolouration to pastedowns from publisher's glue (as often), light offsetting to endpapers, else unmarked internally; publisher's grey cloth, titles to spine and upper cover in red, slight fading to spine and extremities, with the unclipped dustjacket printed in red, spine and edges toned, minor edge-wear, else very good. First separate edition of Hemingway's play with an original print run of 1174 copies. Adapted by Benjamin Glazer and produced by the Theatre Guild in 1940. Uniquely for Scribner's first printing post-1929, this publication does not require an 'A' on the copyright page, the reason being the play had been included in an earlier Scribner's publication. A copy does exist (Clive Hirschhorn) with an 'A' overstamped on the verso of the title page. We believe this to be some bookseller skulduggery in the 1960s. It is just possible that someone at Scribner's overstamped a handful of copies, which by definition must be later. Grissom A.16.1.d.
