Description: 5-7/8" x 8-7/16", x + 597pp. Printed on alkaline paper and bound in sewn signatures in red cloth boards. Title block screened in black and gilt on spine, and a facsimile of Hemingway's signature is screened in black onto the front panel. Missing jacket, but it has left a faint trace at the foot of the front panel where a part of it must have adhered at one time. Minor shelf wear, soiling (visible in the grooves of the spine fold), and the corners are slightly bumped. Top of book block, previously tinted, is faded / discolored. Binding is square and tight. The final three sheets are creased / folded at the bottom. Gift inscribed and dated ("Xmas 1938") in ink on the half title page, otherwise pages are evenly age toned but clean and unmarked.

Description: Later printing with the publisher seal but NOT the "A" on the copyright page. The volume is bumped on the spine has a touch of fraying on the crown, and the spine is rubbed and lightly sunned. The pastedowns and endpapers have areas of darkening, especially around the gutters, and the pages are lightly toned. The "dust jacket", which is slightly taller than the book, includes the rear panel and spine (which has a chipped crown, touching the lettering). There is a horizontal crease running through these remains. This is a book which would look good on a shelf. Probably best to leave it there.

The 1921 short story "Up in Michigan" is published here for the first time, a very early writing from Hemingway. "The Snows of Kilimanjaro", "The Short Happy Life of Francis Macomber", "The Capital of the World", and "Old Man at the Bridge" all appear in this publication for the first time. A beautiful copy, difficult to find in this condition. Minor toning on the endpapers and pastedowns, a strip of discoloration to the bottom textblock; jacket has a couple traces of edge wear.
