SCOTT, Walter. BALLADS AND LYRICAL PIECES [and other works]. John Ballantyne and Co, Edinburgh, 1815.

Price: US$37.50 + shipping

Description: 8vo. Originally bound in brown morocco leather with marbled endpapers. Three titles bound in one volume: (1) GLENFINLAS AND OTHER BALLADS, with a title page showing the publisher as John Sharpe, London, 1812. This title page is immediately followed by a second title page for BALLADS AND LYRICAL PIECES, showing the publisher as James Ballantyne & Co., Edinburgh, 1812, Fourth Edition. Probably Ballantyne used the English sheets for this collection, the pagination for which is pp. [viii], 182. Then follows a second Ballantyne publication, THE VISION OF DON RODERICK AND OTHER POEMS, identified on the title page for this collection as the Second Edition, 1810; and the pagination for which is pp. [11], 164 (followed by three pages of publisher's ads). There are many pages of notes at the end of DON RODERICK, and the Miscellaneous Poems. The third title bound-in is THE FIELD OF WATERLOO; A POEM, also published by Ballantyne, and shown as the Second Edition, 1815. The pagination for this is pp. [187-193], 240 (i.e., 54 pages in total, including notes and a listing of Scott's works at the end). This compilation was originally bound in full morocco, with marbled foredges and endpapers. The boards are now detached (but present). The leather spine is absent. The contents are occasionally foxed, but generally clean and unmarked. The binding is still tight. Obviously, this volume is a candidate for re-backing, or re-binding, and has been priced accordingly. With six steel engravings, engraved from the designs of Rochard Westall, R.A.

Price: US$97.47 + shipping

Condition: Very Good

Description: A very smart copy of an early edition of Scottish novelist Sir Walter Scott's poem, celebrating the Duke of Wellington. The third edition of 'Don Roderick', but the first edition of Scott's work to feature this combination of poems.'The Vision of Don Roderick', first published in 1811, is a poem celebrating the victories of the Duke of Wellington during the Peninsular War. It is based on a historic account of the consultation of an oracle by the last Visigothic King of Spain, Roderic. It's a long work, written in Spenserian stanzas. Also present in this collection are a number of miscellaneous poems, including 'Wandering Willie', 'The Bard's Incantation' and 'The Dance of Death'. In a half calf binding, with marbled paper covered boards. Externally, very smart, with slight discolouration to back strip. Front hinge strained to tail, but firmly held. Internally, firmly bound. Pages bright, with light instances of spotting throughout, most concentrated to first and last few leaves. Very Good

Scott, Sir Walter. Marmion: A Tale Of The Flodden Field.. John Ballantyne and Co, Edinburgh, 1815.

Price: US$100.00 + shipping

Description: This is the Ninth Edition, but bound with the title page and the 6 engravings of the 1809 First Illustrated English Edition. The inside front board has the armorial bookplate of the Bayning peerage, which went extinct in 1866; and I think it is safe to assume that this lovely binding is roughly comtemporary with the book's publication. The binding is a bit worn at the top of the spine, but otherwise very attractive, and somewhat unusual in design, although unsigned. In addition, there is a 1972 inscription on the ffep presenting to the book to the famed San Francisco attorney Melvin Belli by a former employee. (The book was found in Belli's former home in San Francisco.) There is light foxing to the borders of the plares, but the text is clean. All in all, a most intriquing volume.
