Albert Camus (Translated by Stuart Gilbert). CALIGULA AND CROSS PURPOSE (Le Malentendu) - later printing, second impression. Hamish Hamilton, London, 1957.

Price: US$23.10 + shipping

Condition: Very Good

Description: No date - just a copyright date of 1947. However, this appears to be a second impression of a later printing of the book, based on the list of author's works which includes "The Fall" which was published in 1957. There is also mention of Camus winning the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1957. The book was first published in the UK by Hamish Hamilton and in the USA by New Directions, New York - both in 1947, and originally in French as "Le Malentendu suivi de Caligula" in 1944 by Gallimard. ***Very good in blue cloth-covered boards with gilt titles to the spine. The gilt remains bright. Top edge of page block slightly darkened, with a small stain which doesn't affect the interior pages. Top and tail of spine just slightly creased. Top corners slightly creased. Boards clean with just a small mark at the top of the back board. Internally very good also with no inscriptions. Pages clean. No internal foxing. Very slight spine lean but spine tight. ***In a very good printed dustwrapper which has not been price-clipped, showing the original publisher's price of 10s. 6d. net. The dustwrapper states 'Second impression'. The dustwrapper is complete, with just slight edge wear and creasing. No tears. No chips. The dustwrapper is very clean, and even the spine is unfaded. ***190mm x130mm. 168 pages. ***'In the tyranny of Caligula, maddest and most fantastic of Roman Emperors, Albert Camus finds a supreme logic. Who is better fitted than the most powerful autocrat in the world to attempt to realize the Great Ideal --to achieve the impossible, to "fetch the moon home"?' For all his seemingly senseless cruelties, Caligula is not an unsympathetic character. He can win loyalty from people who have the best reason for hating him. In advance he senses and understands the plots of the cowardly conspirators around him. And ironically he goads them on. This is a play about a strange experiment, ruthlessly carried out, with human life no object. In "Cross Purpose", mother and daughter in a country inn plot to murder and rob their guest. Surprise and tragedy await them when they find out who he is. ***These two plays are the major stage works of a writer whose reputation as playwright, philosopher and novelist has now won him the Nobel Prize for Literature for 1957. (Quote taken from the front flap of the dustwrapper) ***A nice period copy of the UK edition of Camus's two plays 'Caligula' and 'Cross Purpose' - of interest to collectors of the work of Albert Camus, and twentieth century drama. The dustwrapper is extremely thin, and copies in such well-preserved condition are hard to come by now. ***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc.

Price: US$635.33 + shipping

Condition: Near Fine

Description: First impression of the first UK edition, published in 1957. The book was also published in the USA by Alfred A. Knopf. Translated from the French into English by Justin O'Brien. With a striking dustwrapper design by Patricia Davey. A near fine book in a near fine dustwrapper, just faded at the spine. ***Near fine in green cloth-covered boards with silver titles to the spine. The silver is still nice and bright, having been protected by the dustwrapper. The boards are clean and unmarked, without any scuffs, rubbing or creasing. Corners sharp. Edges of the page block bright and clean. There is just a very slight reading lean to the binding. Spine tight. Internally the book is also near fine with clean pages. No internal foxing. No creases or tears. No inscriptions. ***In a near fine colour-printed dustwrapper, which has not been price-clipped, retaining the original publisher's printed price of 10s. 6d. net. The dustwrapper is complete with no chips, and only minimal rubbing to the extremities. The back panel is beautifully clean, which is surprising as it is white. The sun-sensitive light and dark red colours to the spine are faded. ***204mm x135mm. 109 pages. ***'"The Fall" (French: La Chute) is a philosophical novel by Albert Camus. First published in 1956, it is his last complete work of fiction. Set in Amsterdam, "The Fall" consists of a series of dramatic monologues by the self-proclaimed "judge-penitent" Jean-Baptiste Clamence, as he reflects upon his life to a stranger. In what amounts to a confession, Clamence tells of his success as a wealthy Parisian defense lawyer who was highly respected by his colleagues. His crisis, and his ultimate "fall" from grace, was meant to invoke, in secular terms, the fall of man from the Garden of Eden. "The Fall" explores themes of innocence, imprisonment, non-existence, and truth. In a eulogy to Albert Camus, existentialist philosopher Jean-Paul Sartre described the novel as "perhaps the most beautiful and the least understood" of Camus' books.' (Wiki) ***A truly beautiful copy of the true first impression of the first UK edition of Albert Camus' novel "The Fall". Because of the fragile nature of this book, and in particular the dustwrapper, copies are rarely found now in such collectable condition and, if they are, they are usually later impressions. This first impression in such near fine condition is something of a rarity. ***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc.
