Folio, 38x25cm, 98pp. Original publisher's binding of paper covered boards separated into three vertical bands of colour, from light gray to black, upper cover with title and abstract design of rectangles in black, original black cloth slipcase. 'Because I survived the vicissitudes of illustrating The Murders in the Rue Morgue and because of the illusory character of the novel, we decided to create rather abstract drawings for the openings of the six chapters. to enliven every text page, small, engraved wood-grained blocks were used at the beginning of each paragraph, and printed in the same colors as the illustrations' (The Allen Press Bibliography, Lewis and Dorothy Allen).
