Potter, Beatrix. THE FAIRY CARAVAN. , 1929.

Price: US$375.00 + shipping

Description: Philadelphia: David McKay Company, (1929). Original dark green cloth with front cover pictorial onlay. First Edition of this collection of tales outside of the "Peter Rabbit" series, about a traveling circus that was invisible to humans. According to her Preface these tales "were not meant for printing. I send them on the insistence of friends beyond the sea [i.e. Alexander McKay]." Beatrix Potter did not wish for an English edition of THE FAIRY CARAVAN, because she felt that the stories were 'too personal -- too autobiographical' to publish in [that] country [Linder]. Thus the first edition was this American one (100 sets of the McKay sheets, with a different first section, became "Beatrix Potter's Limited Edition" in the UK -- to secure copyright there); it was not until 1952 that a UK trade edition appeared, almost a decade after the author's death. Included are six color plates including the frontispiece, plus another on the front cover; there are also numerous drawings within the text, many of them full-page. This is a near-fine copy (a trace of wear at the head of the spine, faint speckling of the cloth sizing, two adjacent leaves with slight marginal damage). Linder pp 292-305 (accidentally omitting mention of the plate facing page 202 in THE FAIRY CARAVAN); Quinby 29A.

Potter, Beatrix. THE FAIRY CARAVAN. David McKay Company, Philadelphia, 1929.

Price: US$650.00 + shipping

Condition: Fine

Description: First US edition (probably preceding the British), a beautiful copy. After Potter finished her Peter Rabbit series, it was her intention to stop writing. It was only with the persuasion of her American publisher, Alexander McKay, that she agreed to write this book meant only for the American market. Linder notes that Potter's Lakeland friends "were quick to recognize many of the pictures with their local settings." This is a stunning copy in clean cloth, with strong hinges. 8.25'' x 6.25''. Original green cloth, pictorial paste-on. Lacking original dust jacket. Illustrated by Potter with 6 color plates and 20 full page and 42 smaller black-and-white drawings. 225, [1] pages. Only a touch of rubbing to spine ends.

Potter, Beatrix.. The Fairy Caravan.. Philadelphia; David McKay Company, 1929., 1929.

Price: US$2340.30 + shipping

Description: INSCRIBED U.S. FIRST EDITION (preceding the U.K. First Edition). Octavo, pp. 225, [1]. Six colour plates including frontispiece, plus numerous line drawings within text including head- and tail-pieces and full page illustrations. Publisher's bottle green cloth with gilt titles and decoration to spine with printed title onlay illustrated in colour to upper board. Housed in a custom-made black morocco silk-lined clam-shell box, with gilt titles and decoration to upper. Cover cloth stained to lower board, gilt dulled; minor wear to spine tips and corners; onlay slightly scuffed but bright. Ownership name & address to front paste-down. Boldly inscribed to title page "Copyright of the Author in Great Britain witheld, entered at Stationers Hall" in Beatrix Potter's hand, and "Philadelphia" crossed through by her in the publisher's imprint. Inner margin p. 108/9 creased otherwise contents clean. A Very Good copy in fine clam-shell box. In 1929, Beatrix Potter realised that the U.S. publication of The Fairy Caravan would leave her lacking a British copyright; so she requested that her American publisher David McKay send her 100 sets of sheets to be privately published in Britain. These were bound up by George Middleton in Ambleside in a signed limited edition of 100 copies. Its seems highly likely that in writing such an explicit inscription to the title page Ms Potter was asserting her right to the copyright and using this copy to illustrate this to her UK publisher, as well as to provide him with the text for the UK title-page.
