Price: US$850.00 + shipping

Condition: Very Good

Description: First edition, second issue with the "htat" misprint on the first line of page 208. The author's third major work of evolutionary theory, following On the Origin of Species (1859) and The Descent of Man (1871). Initially intended as a chapter in The Descent of Man, The Expression grew in length and was published separately in 1872. This book concerns the biological aspects of emotional behavior, and Darwin explores the animal origins of such human characteristics as the lifting of the eyebrows in moments of surprise and the raising of the upper lip in an aggressive sneer. Octavo: vi, 374 p. with 7 heliotype plates (3 folding), 21 textual figures, and 4 p. publisher's ads. Original green cloth binding, with gilt stamping, blind-stamped borders, and black endpapers. Some marginal creasing (not affecting the images) and minor foxing to the folding plates. Period previous owner's pencil signature to the top of the title page. The hinges are just starting and still quite sound. A bit of wear to the corners and tips; else very good.

DARWIN Charles. The expression of the emotion in man and animals. John Murray, London, 1872.

Price: US$1049.65 + shipping

Prima edizione in seconda tiratura riconoscibile dall'errore di pagina 208 che reca la parola 'that' scritta erroneamente 'htat' e a pagina 104 nell'ultima riga vi è la scritta 'In several languages of Europe' invece di 'In all the languages of Europe'.

Condition: Very Good

Description: First edition, second issue with "htat" misprint on the first line of page 208. One of 7000 copies. Publisher's green cloth with decorative borders in blind to front and rear boards, titles and decorations in gilt to spine, green endpapers, seven Heliotype Plates numbered in Arabic. Very good or better with light wear to spine hinges and corners, a bit of toning to spine, some spotting to the plates on pages 180 and 264, a few small notes in pencil to a couple pages, and a touch of soiling to bottom edge of text block. Overall, a solid copy of Darwin's "forgotten masterpiece," with very well-preserved plates. Freeman 1142. The Expression of the Emotions in Man and Animals expands on Darwin's theories raised in On the Origin of Species (1859) and The Descent of Man (1871), arguing that there is an evolutionary explanation for the human expression of emotions. The book was originally intended by Darwin to be a chapter in The Descent of Man, but grew until it was necessary to publish the work separately. An influential text in the field of psychology, the book has also been described as "a pivotal turning point in the history of book illustration, right up there with Alice in Wonderland" (The Atlantic). With seven plates of heliotypes that represent various human emotions, The Expression of the Emotions was one of the first scientific books to include photographs. These photographs were provided by a handful of photographers and researchers, including Guillaume-Benjamin Duchenne, Adolph Kindermann, George Charles Wallich, James Crichton-Browne, and Oscar Rejlander. Rejlander contributed nineteen of the thirty photographs in the book, including the crying baby photo, later dubbed "Ginx's baby," which became incredibly popular in its time. Interestingly, Darwin's research for the book prompted him to circulate one of the first scientific questionnaires, which he used to gauge people's ability to identify a handful of core emotions.

Split to the fold and some creases to pl. 6. Z2.3 unopened. A very good copy. Although Darwin's (1809-1882) magnum opus was the Origin of Species (1859), which sought to explain the mechanism of evolution of all species by natural selection, his reading public clamored for studied of humans. Indeed, the Origin was long mis-interpreted as implying that Homo sapiens was the terminus of all evolution. The Descent of Man (1871) sought specifically to satisfy this burning interest, and the present work addresses a particular red herring: that humans developed physical structures (muscles, eyebrows etc.) specifically for the expression of emotions. Darwin, though not a specialist in this particular field (he relies heavily on the work of Sir Charles Bell in particular), dispels the notion that there are muscles of expression; facial expressions in particular are common to a great many species and to many situations other than the display of emotion. The second issue of the work is distinguished by a few authorial corrections and additions, hastily made (since the first issue was published in November, and almost immediately sold out its run of 5,000 copies). Although Duchenne de Boulogne had pioneered the use of photography for the study of emotional expression (Mécanisme de la physionomie humaine, Paris: 1862), Darwin here employs it to fine effect. The plates are heliotypes, a variant of the collotype. The first (and one of the most delicate) method of commercial photographic dissemination, a glass plate was treated with light-sensitive gelatin, which would harden where exposed; the unexposed parts could be washed away, leaving dark channels in which ink would collect. The gelatin itself -- naturally quite friable -- could be used to print, but only for a few hundred impressions at most. Freeman 1142.

DARWIN, Charles.. The Expression of the Emotions in Man and Animals. With photographic and other illustrations.. London: John Murray, 1872, 1872.

Price: US$2898.59 + shipping

Description: First edition, first issue, with "that" spelled correctly on the first line of p. 208 (misspelled in the second issue). The Expression of the Emotions "appeared in November, and was awaited with such interest that over 5,000 copies were sold on the day of publication" (Huxley, p. 96). It was "written, in part at least, as a confutation of the idea that the facial muscles of expression in man were a special endowment" (Freeman), a subject originally intended for The Descent of Man. Darwin invited the photographer Oscar Rejlander to make comparative studies of laughter and crying, obtained photographs of asylum inmates from the asylum director James Crichton-Browne, and consulted the French physiologist Guillaume Duchenne regarding his electrical research on the facial muscles. The plates are among the earliest commercially reproduced photographs in a scientific book. They are lettered with Roman numerals in this copy; another state is known in Arabic numerals, without priority of issue. Freeman suggests that the Arabic numeral plates were printed first, but notes that "the two states seem to occur at random in the two issues of the text, and Darwin's own copy, at Cambridge, has the Roman" (Freeman). Freeman 1141; Garrison-Morton 4975; Norman 600. Leonard Huxley, Charles Darwin, 1921. Octavo. Original dark green cloth, spine lettered in gilt, covers panelled in blind, black endpapers. With 7 heliotype plates, of which 3 folding, woodcut illustrations within text, many full-page. With 4 pp. publisher's advertisements dated November 1872 at rear. W. H. Smith & Son blind stamp on front free endpaper verso, gift inscription in ink on recto dated 1880. Spine ends and corners bumped, spine panel a little cockled and small closed tear to cloth of same discreetly restored, small knock to outer edge of front cover, inner hinges repaired, free endpapers creased, contents generally clean, short closed tear at upper edge of leaf Q5 neatly repaired: a very good copy.
