Description: The Excursion, Being a Portion of The Recluse, A Poem, By William Wordsworth, Printed for Longman, Hurst, Rees, Orme, and Brown, London, 1814, 3/4 leather, 447 pp, 10.75 x 9”, 4to. In good condition. Moderate wear to extremities with scuffing along corners, end bands and edges. Five raised bands are scuffed, gilt work rubbed but intact. Light abrasions and peeling to surface of marbled boards. All edges marbled. Brown end papers are clean, but slightly foxed. Interior lightly toned with nominal foxing. Old hand gift inscription at top of title page dated 1840. A “63” is written in old hand script on the back of the title page. Binding tight and intact. Free of known marginalia. Please see photos. First edition, long poem by William Wordsworth (1770-1850). Wordsworth was an English Romantic poet who, with Samuel Taylor Coleridge, helped to launch the Romantic Age in English literature with their joint publication Lyrical Ballads.

Errata leaf present. Provenance: Engraved bookplate to front pastedown of the late 19th-century novelist and author of the essay The Platonism of Wordsworth J[oseph] H[enry] Shorthouse.

Description: First edition. 4to. 8 (advertisements), xiv, 423, (1), (2 errata), (xv)-xx, (425)-447, (1) pp. Uncut with the original boards incorporated into a parchment half binding, possibly in the late 19th century, with endpapers from that time, some leaves with early annotations: p.39 with what appears to be the name Beaumont to the inner margin; p.101 with four initials to the inner margin, possibly "A.J.H.: M."; p.104 with a variation on the printed text from ".or should chrystal tube / Be lodged therein." to ". or should chrystal cube / Lock in its cells."; p.112 with a simple spelling correction; p.195 with an additional line of verse inserted in pencil between lines 6 and 7 - "The joy of that pure principle of love". Some wear to the boards, an attractive well margined copy. Healey, 24. With Y1 in the cancelled state and the errata suggesting this is a second state or issue.
