Description: First Edition.First Issue. 103 pp. 8vo. Near Fine. Rarely found in such good, almost unused condition. A lovely copy of this popular 1885 lesson and spelling book for young children, with charming line drawings in brown throughout by Kate Greenaway. (The second issue had coloured illustrations). Protected in clear removable acetate jacket. In publisher's original paper covered boards, printed in red and black, with speckled fore, top and bottom edges. Very minor foxing to front endpapers only. Age toning to boards and spine as is usual with this edition, but otherwise unmarked. Corners are nicely sharp although bottom two have tiny areas of paper loss at points. Again as is usual for this edition, the spine has a central longitudinal crease ( the paper is not split). All titles are clear and bright. Small area of creasing and shelf wear at top of spine that has resulted in very minor chip. Spine edge has 1cm paper slit. Internally and externally sound, with no damage or strain to hinges or guttering. The page block is particularly good,clean bright and tight, and looks hardly if ever opened. No inscriptions or previous owners' names.
