Description: Limited edition of 550 copies. Cloth, gilt cover-titles and device, gilt dentelles, 4to, 22 cm, [4], 70 pp. From the introduction: "The purpose of this essay is to enquire whether, in the wide landscape of the English temperament, there exists a special corner which can correctly be defined as " the English sense of humour." Are the English more sensitive than are other nations to certain aspects of the inconsequent or the incongruous ? Or is the English sense of humour little more than the temperamental reflection of such national characteristics as kindliness, tolerance, sentimentality, optimism, laziness, playfulness, childishness, dislike of extremes, and a desire for mental and emotional ease ? I shall consider whether the sense of humour is in fact an English monopoly and, if so, whether it is transitory or permanent. I shall try to define the level of consciousness at which it operates, I shall examine the stränge combination which it presents of complacency and difïidence, of the sardonic and the gentle. I shall investigate how far it is a protective mechanism and how far it is a mood assumed in order to economize mental or emotional effort. And in conclusion I shall seek to verify my assumptions by illustrations drawn from Punch, Edward Lear and Kavanagh." Copy No. 214. Covers a little duststained at edges and with minor bumps to edges and lower corners, otherwise Near Very Good. .
