Fairies, knights, and dragons populate this ever so slightly more traditional fantasy tale by Baum, though with a number of elements that remind readers of Oz - including a magician who is a fraud. At this early period, Baum was basking in the success of THE WONDERFUL WIZARD OF OZ and its theatrical adaptation, but still experimenting with fantasies adjacent to Oz rather than squarely within what would become an epochal franchise.
