Handsome first edition of this play in verse -- with choice autograph addition: Tipped to front pastedown is a fine signature from the lead character of the 1958 first production at the Edinburgh Festival on a heavy stock 5" X 3" card. PAUL ROGERS, who played Lord Claverton, signs large and bold in blue ink, dating it 13 July 1971 at upper right. Rogers (1917-1913) was the distinguished Tony Award-winning English actor of numerous stage, film and television productions. Ideal book mark laid in as well: Rogers original transmittal envelope.

Description: Proof copy. Wrappers (printing the title as "THE ELDER STATESMAN by T.S. ELLIOT"). Spine slightly rubbed at foot, covers very slightly faded, some light spotting. Inscribed in pencil on the upper cover (the inscription crossed through roughly in ballpoint), "Mr Harnach about 12/6 net May 8", title inked on spine; loosely inserted the publisher's printed compliments slip, inscribed "John T. Harnack". The Elder Statesman was first performed at the Edinburgh Festival on 25-30 August 1958, with Anna Massey as Monica Claverton-Ferry. Harnack was a rep with Faber; the book, published on 10 April, is dedicated "To My Wife" - Valerie, the author's secretary at Faber, whom he married on 10 January 1957: "To you I dedicate this book, to return as best I can / With words a little part of what you have given me. / The words mean what they say, but some have a further meaning / For you and me only."
