Keynes, John Maynard. The economic consequences of the peace. Harcourt, Brace and Howe, New York, 1920.

Price: US$20.00 + shipping

Condition: Good

Description: 298 pages ; 21 cm. ; navy full cloth. Insect damage and wear to spine and cover. Rear hinge weak and separating. John Maynard Keynes, then a rising young economist, participated in the Paris Peace Conference in 1919 as chief representative of the British Treasury and advisor to Prime Minister David Lloyd George. He resigned after desperately trying and failing to reduce the huge demands for reparations being made on Germany. The Economic Consequences of the Peace is Keynes' brilliant and prophetic analysis of the effects that the peace treaty would have both on Germany and, even more fatefully, the world.

Description: Harcourt, Brace and Howe, New York, 1920. Hardcover. Condition: Fine. No Jacket. 1st Edition. The Economic Consequences of the Peace by John Maynard Keynes. First American edition in original cloth. Publisher: Harcourt, Brace and Howe, New York, 1920. First edition with the publishing date on both the title-page and copyright pages. Binding is in fine condition. Contents clean, two pages with rough cut separation at the top. 298 pages. 5 _ x 8 _ inches. Keynes attended the Versailles Conference as a delegate of the British Treasury and argued for a much more generous peace. It was a best-seller throughout the world and was critical in establishing a general opinion that the Versailles Treaty was a "Carthaginian peace". It helped to consolidate American public opinion against the treaty and involvement in the League of Nations. The perception by much of the British public that Germany had been treated unfairly in turn was a crucial factor in public support for appeasement. The success of the book established Keynes' reputation as a leading economist especially on the left. When Keynes was a key player in establishing the Bretton Woods system in 1944, he remembered the lessons from Versailles as well as the Great Depression. The Marshall Plan after Second World War is a similar system to that proposed by Keynes in The Economic Consequences of the Peace. Page 184 roughly opened. [Loc.19]

Description: 1920 ECONOMICS 1st ed KEYNES Consequences of Peace Versailles Conference Germany When the final result is expected to be a compromise, it is often prudent to start from an extreme position. John Maynard Keynes, The Economic Consequences of the Peace John Maynard Keynes was a 20th-century British economist most known for his book The Economic Consequences of the Peace. This work was widely acclaimed by the public because it disclosed, to a far greater extent than anything up to that time, the proceedings at the Versailles Conference, where the treaty with Germany was being drafted. Keynes, who attended these meetings as a member of the British Treasure delegation, showed himself to be no meek author, but a brilliant writer who was determined to deliver his message to the world and be heard. The gospel he sought to preach was that the treat was an act of wickedness and folly . (Cammarosano, 70) Keynes strongly protested the imposition of large reparations on Germany and insisted the terms of the treaty never be enforced. This book made Keynes extremely popular with the public, but extremely unpopular with the government.
