Condition: Fine

Description: Number 188 of the first 500 copies, a portfolio with 12 loose photogravure plates, 5 of which are images of New York, including the iconic Flatiron Building. Steichen's Flatiron reflects his training as a painter; he photographed the building at dusk in winter, from the west side of Madison Square Park. The tree branches in the foreground move the eye down to the rain soaked street, and the outline of a carriage driver. Steichen's image immortalized the Flatiron. Includes three additional items: 1. The printed prospectus; 2. A letter from the publisher, Aperture; and 3. An original invoice. The photogravure plates with tissue guards include: Grand prix at Longchamp, after the races. Paris, 1907 -- Self-portrait with sister. Milwaukee, 1900 -- Torso. Paris, 1902 -- Moonrise. Mamaroneck, New York, 1904 -- In memoriam. New York, 1902 -- Steichen and wife Clara on their honeymoon. Lake George, New York, 1903 -- Richard Strauss. New York, 1904 -- The Flatiron. New York, 1905 -- Heavy roses. Voulangis, France, 1914 -- Isadora Duncan at the portal of the Parthenon. Athens, 1920 -- Three pears and an apple. France, c. 1921 -- Brancusi in his studio. Paris, 1925. Portfolio (17 x 21 1/4") with gilt title. [7] pp, 12 unnumbered leaves of plates.
